Topic: RE: Which surgery would be best for my diabetes?
Personal experiences are almost irrelevant - nothing works 100% of the time, and some will have better results than normal. Please see my profile for actual research.

ok, so what is it abt ds vs. rny? I am having a hard time decided on what to do. I am on the brink of having a band and now having second thoughts because i dont think it will work for me. seems like a glorified diet. And my main concern is the diabetes and bp, I want it gone. so what is your experience??
Topic: 1 year post op now very LOW blood sugar levels
I am not understanding this... even my doctors are confounded.. I talked to my WLS and He said that if I just take away some starches that my sugar will level out but that was may 2010
now Sunday night 7-25-10 I was in the middle of eating food and my mouth and tongue and lips went numb then my nose went numb then I started to feel real hot and dizzy and sorta sweaty and hubby checked my sugar level and it was 56!
Now normal range is around 90 for me and once it goes below 85 I get shaky and not feeling well but for the last week or so my sugar drops into the 60's every day / night I am not understanding what is going on I have done everything I have been told to do and my PC doctor ran blood tests and He said that all my vitamins levels are GREAT and my liver function and pancreas function are perfect and the only thing he even sees wrong is my sugar levels were low... Then he asked me how I felt in his office and I told him kinda shaky and not feeling so well even though I had eaten a yogurt 45 minutes before he checked my level it was only 80! So he ordered MORE BLOOD TEST! This time he drew over 7 or 8 BIG tubes of blood from me and said that I would have to wait till Friday or Monday before I will even get the results back..
In the meantime I am here asking has this happened to anyone here after a year of everything being perfect to have this happen now.... I am confused
Please to anyone who can offer up any advice as to why or to what I can do to change this I would so thank you!
BTW I had RNY gastric bypass

Topic: RE: Blood sugar issues since surgery...
How low was it? Had you had hypoglycemia pre-op? I know some type 2s do while others don't (I have never had a hypo episode and was diagnosed type 2 more than two years ago).
Topic: RE: LOW bloodsugar?
Good Luck!
I will tell you that i am 5 years post op and since I had the surgery my levels have been low. A year ago I wound up with my sugar bottoming out at 32 and me have no recollection of anything happening. I am still going from Dr. to Dr. looking for some answers.
Please just be careful.

Topic: Blood sugar issues since surgery...
I have not had to take metformin since surgery - my blood sugar pretty much has hovered in the 90 to 120 range fasting and post-prandial. I have been sticking to a low-carb diet with around 20-30 grams of carbs per day and I think that has helped me keep my diabetes at bay. Then last night I ate a small bowl of homemade chili with two saltines in it. I woke up during the night feeling shaky. I checked my blood sugar and it was low. I'm hoping it was just a reaction to the carbs I ate rather than a resurgance of my blood sugar issues. I think I need to stick to eating low carb - I really do feel best with that. Any diabetics out there that have had experience with blood sugar fluctuations post surgery that might be able to give me some advice?
Topic: RE: A1C Test Results, 10 weeks Post Op
You are very lucky! My A1C went down to about 6 after my RNY but I never went off meds and slowly had to increase my meds. I am almost 4 years post op and take 4 meds, last A1C in May was 7.2! I weigh 148, go to the gym 5x a week and watch my diet. I think it's because I had type 2 diabetes for 17 years prior to RNY. I am still glad I had the surgery...I'd probably be walking with a cane now and maybe have had some limbs removed, who knows? My quality of life would have been awful. So I still have to take meds but I am pretty much healthy otherwise!
