I had Gestational Diabetes with both pregnancies and it stuck around after my last baby was born last year and it made me look like a Macy's Thanksgiving day balloon because I swelled up! As a result I became Morbidly obese, thus having WLS and BAMN! The new Marilyn was born. Life is so much better now that the Diabetes is gone forever!!

not sure if  this will help you or not but here goes..about 2.5 months ago i literallly woke up and everything was blurry..went to the optomitrist he said my perscrption had changed (alot)..didnt sound right to me but what do i know..got my new glasses and could see great...about a week later im driving to work and everything is blurry...i take off the glass and i can see perfectly..wtf..go back to the dr and after checking my eyes and scratching his head a bit he says i want you to go and get your blood sugar checked...now let me back track and tell you that i didnt know i had diabetes at the time and at the time when everything went blurry i was on a really strict diet and exercise regimin...let me also say that by the time i got the glass and the eyesight had changed again i was off the diet and eating badly...well the dr. told me...when your blood sugar is high it causes you to be nearsighted...i am farsightefd..so when my blood sugar was low everything was really blurry, because that is my true perscription and when i was eating badly the nearsightedness cancelled out my farsightedness and i could see great...sooooooooooooo...if your blood sugar is good and in control i would go to the dr and get a new perscription..if not...wait until it is...sorry so long, i know it sounds crazy but this is what the man told me...

I've been lucky that so far, I haven't had any vision problems due to diabetes complications. But I have noticed a fairly significant vision change in the last year. I honestly don't think it's from surgery/weight loss, but I suppose it could be. I think it's more due to age--I'm now mid-40s, and I was already on the cusp of needing the dreaded (gasp) bifocals. Now I definitely do!

That said, I've seen a person here or there say their vision changed post-surgery. It probably wouldn't hurt to wait until you're six months post-op, just in case. If you can wait that long.

Topic: Vision Changes?
 Hi All,

This might seem like a totally random and stupid question, but have any of you experienced changes in your vision as a result of losing weight after WLS?

The reason I ask is that I have diabetes. It's one of my co-morbidities. It has caused changes in my vision, and my vision has gotten worse over the last year or so
I was thinking about looking into getting contacts when my mom mentioned that I may want to wait on it. She seems to think that as I lose weight, my diabetes will improve and so will my vision.

Any experience with this?

After three years of my diabetes being resolved, it came back with full force. I felt all the symptoms, but instead of gaining, I was losing weight as all the sugars just flowed out of my body. I was in serious denial. I finally had to admit it, went to see my doc, and am now on an insulin pump. Things are more regulated and I see the light at the end of the tunnel. But I am also worried because insulin makes me HUNGRY and I can eat more than I used to be able to. I think that just happens over time. Get it checked out. I have some nueropathy now that I didn't have and eyesight issues. You don't want that...

It can happen really quick for some people. I am 1 week out from surgery and I was on 225 lantus a day before surgery. I left the hospital not useing any and I still do not have to have any. It is exciting. Good luck to everyone!

I had diabetes, not pre and my surgery made it go away.  I haven't had one med since my surgery and my blood sugar is in the exact optimal place.  I am soooooooooooo excited.   Don't be scared!  Just go ahead with each day and realize that the surgery could take care of everything.  :)

I used Byetta.  It did get my sugars down but MAN, everything I ate, I wanted to puke.  It is strong stuff and nothing tasted good.  After my surgery, my bl. sug. has leveled out at 86.  every single day!!  it is the greatest thing I ever did.  Haven't had one diabetes med since the day I had my surgery.  HURRAY!!!
