Topic: RE: Diabetes post op? Yes, still do

I an still diabetic, but I use a lot less insulin since surgery. My A1C's have been in the 5.x since surgery.  Diabetes has been much easier to manage since surgery.

Topic: Diabetic and Need Experience Help

Hi - I had RNY on April 17th, 2012.  I am diabetic and it did not go into remission.  It did however get better for a while.  My A1c was 12.2 before I started this journey and got down to 8.  It is now back to 11.1, which means my blood sugars are out of control again.

I will contribute some of this to me getting back in to bad eating habits.  I have not gained back weight.  I went from 285 to 175 and still maintaining.

I swear that sometimes my blood sugars goes up if I drink water, probably a little exaggerated (lol).  I know that I have allowed some bad carbs into my diet.  So I will start tracking and get off the bad carbs.

The reason for the post is I wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience after WLS with blood sugars being high.  How did you fix it?  Is exercise the answer to lower blood sugars?  Is it just your diet?  Is it the medication?  I am on a insulin pump and don't want to get back into just pumping insulin to lower blood sugars which makes you gain weight.  I need another alternative and would very much like some feedback.

I know that this forum doesn't get a lot of traffic but please if you read this post and have any advice please don't hesitate to post a answer.  Thanks - debbie

Topic: Acute inflammation of the pancreas

I am not a drinker and had my Gall Bladder removed 20 years ago but 5 days after taking Yakon Syrup, I was in the hospital for a week.

I wonder, since the Yakon stimulates the pancreas, is there any connection??

Topic: RE: type 2 considering bypass

I had my surgery about three weeks ago. I had a pre-op physical where my A1c was about 7.4, with fasting BG of ~175 each morning. I was taking metformin (500 mg), glipizide and Invokana. I stopped taling the glipizide one week into my three week pre-op diet, and stopped the metformin and invokana 3 days before surgery. I just had my first lab work post surgery, and my A1c has dropped to 5.7 and my average fasting glucose has been between 85 - 90 every morning. I know that given another three months my A1c will come down even more.

I also stopped taking my blood pressure med, and today my blood pressure was normal. I stopped taking Lipitor for cholesteral and triglycerides, and they were normal also.

For me, the surgery has been very successful in allowing me to stop taking meds and if this continues, my health will be drastically improved in the long run.

Hi I had my RNYGB on Jan 29th  in Edmonton and it was a rough week but have got thru it.  Amazingly my blood sugars are close to normal or normal now- still taking small amount of insulin and average Metformin but this is DRASTICALLY down from pre-surgery.  I have been able to eat a full fluid diet and get most of my protein requirements in with protein supplements.  I have lost 15 lbs already too, although I think my weight loss better slow down here or I will loose all the weight I need to loose within a month of surgery!  I feel more energy and vibrancy already, just one week post op.  I think this surgery will be my miracle, but need time to tell for sure!
