Topic: RE: Glucose Reading... Confused!
Thanks so much! I called my dr's office and spoke with a on-call nurse, she told me to call and make a appointment with my PCP immediately. But she said it's nothing to go to the ER about. I'm going  to get up in the morning and exercise and I'm going to watch carefully what I eat. I can't wait for my surgery, I hope the diabetes and sleep apnea go away!!!! Thanks again for your concern and for responding.

I would call your doctors office. Usually there is a nurse on call or a message center that will have the doctor on call, call you. If those are you true blood sugar levels that is very high. I would see what the Doctor suggessts you do. Good luck!

Topic: Glucose Reading... Confused!
I was just told I am diabetic. I used expired test strips this morning around 11:30am. I had them during my pregnancy in 2010 when I had gestational diabetes. I wanted to tesf my sugar levels. I got a reading of 350, so I asked my husband would allow me to take his and he agreed and his reading was 88. So then I wasn't satisfied so I asked my stepson if he would do it and he agreed and his reading was 81. I'm not sure what to do or think. Please help me! It's Sundat and I don't want to be in the ER. I would like to wait until monday and talk to my PCP.

Topic: RE: insulin resistance

Insulin resistance is a decreased ability of some of the cells of the body to respond to insulin. It is the beginning of the body not dealing well with sugar. The main job of insulin is to get certain body cells to "open up" to take in glucose but  Insulin resistance happens when the cells essentially don't open the door when insulin comes knocking.

Topic: RE: RNY 3/20/2012 need advice??
Hi Kalyssa and welcome!  These are great questions for your doctor/surgeon/medical team and I hope that you have asked them so that you can thoroughly understand what to expect.  I would suppose you have or you would not have made the decision to go through with surgery.  I am 6 months post RNY and a Type 1.5 diabetic.

Everyone's results are different and what you can expect with your other medical conditions obviously is dependent on your age, the severity of your conditions, what your doctors say, etc.  I too had some reflux which has completed disappeared.  My diabetes is generally better on less medicine, PCOS too - but I am post-menopausal.

If I were to offer you any words of advice, it would be to stringently follow doctor's orders.  No freelancing.  No thinking you know better than they do.  No fooling around.  That's your best chance for success.  I would also suggest that you become as educated as you can about any medical conditions you have and also the surgery.  This allows you to understand a bit better how all of these things interact and what is happening to you.

I would also suggest that you start exercising as soon as the doctor says it's ok.  Walking, walking, walking - you won't believe how much that helps.  But, know that it will be slow going at first.  But, if you keep at it, you will very quickly notice how much you can do and how much better you feel.

Also, one thing I did NOT know prior to surgery, is that you actually gain weight after surgery for a few days.  Once released from the hospital, I jumped on the scale as soon as I got home - only to see that I had GAINED 10 pounds.  I was stunned, and called the doctor's office - only to find out that you pick up a LOT of fluid weight from the surgery.  My ankles were very, very swollen, but the walking really helped to move that fluid off and I lost that 10 pounds in about 4-5 days.  So, don't be in a panic - it's perfectly normal.

Best of luck and keep posting!!

Topic: RE: Melatonin
Melatonin decreases the body's response to insulin.

The NP at my surgeon's office said fasting fingerstick below 100 was perfect. They were not overly concerned with my results at just over 100 when I took melatonin  you may have to check your bloodsugar in the mornings before eating and see how your body responds to melatonin.

Topic: RE: Melatonin
Can you forgive what is probably a stupid question up front and educate me?
I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2, 6 months before my wls, (sleeved), I never took anything for the diabetes prior to the surgery.  After surgery I don't want to take anything, and I love melatonin, I take it every night.  My question is:  What is a good range for bs. and isn't it a good thing that it decreases insulin?
All mixed up I guess.  Help me understand.
Thanks!
