Topic: RE: Low blood sugar question
I have never been diabetic, but I was having this problem last month (about 9 months out from RNY).  My  blood sugar fell to 47 and I almost passed out!  My doctor told me to STOP carbs and focus on proteins, which sounded strange to me.  He explained that when you eat carbs your body has to produce more glucose and then it has to fall down....or something like that.

Bottom line is that it worked for me.  I will still have fruit occaisionally, but no pasta, bread, potatoes, crackers, etc.  No more low blood sugar!

Topic: RE: Anyone with Celiac here?
Thank you for responding.  I have had Celiac for several years myself.  I just didn't know it would affect the type of surgery I could have.  I thought the LRNY would bypass the part of the intestines that gluten damages and that would be a good thing.  I was told I can probably do the sleeve or lap band but doctors do not want to touch the intestines because Celiac can cause later medical problems and there is the chance intestine would have to be removed.  I was wondering if anyone with Celiac has had bariatric surgery and what type?

Thank you!

With celiac disease, you can't eat anything made with wheat, barley, rye, and should avoid oats. So, you have to give up versions of the foods you love but don't have to give them up completeley. I have been eating a celiac (Gluten-Free Flour) diet for almost six months now.

Thanks,

Are the gastro pains from the acarbose getting any better? I hope so. Have you tried any fruits yet? That will be a real test of the acarbose. Next time you see Dr. Patti, ask her about gut hormone blocker. My endo is going to test me to see if I am a candidate for this as she says it has helped some people.

Very weird about the potatoes! I can't even look at a potato in any form w/out spiking. I live in Indiana. The lo carb groceries we had here closed several years ago. I buy some things on Netrition web site. Dixie Diner is a good brand with low carb brownies (1 carb each). Also, try the Hunt's lo carb ketchup (1 carb versus 5 carbs in regular). Walden Farms chocolate syrup and maple syrup (0 carbs) are good. I find that if I eat 5 pecans or 5 almonds, I can raise my blood sugar 10 points, gradually.Test in 1/2 hour and eat 5 more if necessary. Your nutritionist sounds great.

Ill have to check it out. I just made a five bean salad. I eat lots of cheeses with peperoni. The nutricianist for Dr Patti told me low fat foods go through the system faster....thus the upload of carbs is quicker. If I go over 200 I get dry heaves wicked bad. She said no low fat mayo, no low fat dressing. Try and use Olive oil on everything I can ect. Weird thing is I can eat potatoes if they are latkes(jewish potatoe pancake) made the way I always make them, even white flour. I had noticed this while I was pregnant before medications and such. I tested it tonight again. I had four pancakes probably the equivilant to a whole potato with pork tenderloin. blood sugar before eating was 72. after eating it went up to only 115 the highest...testing every 20 minutes for 2 hours. Dr Patti wants my blood sugars to always be above 90...wow that is easier said than done. Mine like to hover in the 70's unless I am eating.... do you live in New England? I heard there is a low carb only grocery store near Boston...I want to check it out so bad..I'm gonna google it!
