Topic: RE: Blood sugar reaction to fruit post surgery
Frankly, I was consuming so little that it didn't matter. Just getting through the sf jello was chore enough. And there's always water available. They sent a lot on the tray - broth, jello, decaf coffee (I HATE COFFEE!), and sometimes the juice. So, that's a large quantity for the few days post--surgery. I went for broth and jello most of the time and it took forever to consume just that.
I did tell the surgeon and also provided the feedback on the survey. The nurses were very good where I was, so I am sure if I wanted a sub, they would have gotten it for me.
Everyone realized that I was a diabetic, except dietary I think!
Good luck to you - where are you in the process?

Terry, so what did you tell them at the hospital when they sent you juice? Did they replace it with something else? I am thinking, no, planning the surgery and I don't want to be given liquids that I can't consume!
Topic: RE: postprandial hypoglycemia
I posted here a few weeks ago. As I said, I can only eat 4 grams of carbs without a spike, sometimes it is now 3, as I am losing more weight (99 yesterday). I too have read Dr. Patti's powerpoint. I contacted her office and her assistent was most kind and thought she would want to see me as a patient. Scanned my records and emailed them but got no reply.
With a new endocrinologist, I took the glucose tolerance test with ensure under a controlled medical setting and dropped to 27. A terrible experience as I normally would not injest that many carbs. I am anxious to hear the results of the test. I believe that if it indicates hyperinsulinimic hypoglysemia without nesidioblastosis, a takedown will help because the food will not enter the small intestine so quickly. However, if there is nesidioblastosis, a takedown won't help. Has your doctor talked to you about a takedown?
I wish I didn't have to work. It is so hard to keep from accidently eating over 4 carbs at a setting and then, of course, I am useless afterwards. Also, very fatigued. Looking forward to trying acarbose, but I don't think it will be a total answer. Can't take Byetta as I get awful side effects from it.
I see you are in pacific time. There was an interesting study done at Stanford feeding patients with our symptoms with a G-tube through the remnant stomach. Five of the six in the study did not develop symptoms with feeding through the remnant stomach. This makes me wonder if restoring the original pathway of digestion would be helpful in alleviating our symptoms.

Snowing here as well (near Philadelphia) and has been all day. Sounds like you are right on schedule and doing what is expected. Glad everything went OK for you on Monday! One day at a time will get you there......
I had 6 weeks on Monday and am down 25 pounds. Just saw my surgeon on Friday for second follow visit and things are going well. Those 6 weeks went faster than I thought they would, so hang in there!

I came home Wed. Getting better every day. At first bad gas pains. Now I'm coughing which is making it painful and constipated. Been walking around but today getting a strange snow storm. Leaving trees down no power. We've been lucky. Everyday pain is better. One day at a time
Topic: RE: Need some advise
I am type 1.5 diabetes x 25 years. I had RNY in September, so just about 7 weeks out from surgery. I don't have the other issues you mentioned.
Have you consulted with your endocrinologist and asked for his/her opinion on this? Or had a WLS consultation yet? I think those visits could help to answer a number of your questions about what could happen for you. My surgeon also required attendance at support group and I'm betting you can find someone with your issues at one of those.
I am on insulin still, but about half of pre-surgery levels with much better control. I'm off blood pressure and cholesterol meds and 2 out of 3 orals for diabetes. I do take metformin again, but half of previous levels. I have 80-90 pounds to lose total and have lost 25 in 6 weeks. I thought about having surgery for about 9 years and had saw 3 surgeons before deciding to proceed.
A lot of people do get off their c-paps for sleep apnea after they've lost weight. So, you should ask about that and what you can expect.
It's a big decision, but just keep asking your questions until you get answers that make sense to you. And, in my experience, if the surgeon couldn't answer my questions, I knew they were not the right person for me.
Best of luck to you - be patient and curious.

Topic: Need some advise
I've been type 1 for about 23 years. I have a series of health related issues.
- For the past 4 years I have had to be on Prednisone to be able to breath. Dr's call it asthma even though asthma meds make no difference. If I don't take Pred I can't breath. I've passed out during coughing attacks and my lungs fill with mucus. The Pred is the only things that helps. The pred is slowing killing me though and make controling blood sugar levels a challenge. Prior to taking the drug I was consistantly under 7 A1c. Since being on the meds I've never been below 7.7.. Over this time I've put on 80+ lbs (350 total).
- Finally my lung dr told me the only way to get off the drug is to loss the weight. Easy for him to say as Pred makes that virtually impossible. He suggested WLS and I'm listening.
- I've concluded that I'm going to do to sleeve in Feb 2012 but am really concerned with potential complications (have a wife and 2 young daughters)
I guess I'm posting this for a couple reasons
1) has anyone ever lost their dependance for pred following weight loss, if so how long?
2) what impact did the weight loss have on your dependance to other meds? Right now I'm on a cpap, lipator, licinipril, and zantac..
Somebody give me some good news. I really want to get control of my life again...

Topic: RE: A1C Levels QUESTION PLEASE HELP
I just posted almost the same thing on the VSG maintence board. I'm 6 months out. I've lost 100 pounds. I eat under 30-40 carbs a day. I just got a call that I'm prediabetic and my a1c was 6.0. I haven't been to the drs yet for details but I'd like to keep in touch with you to see what happens in your situation.
Topic: RE: Question for Type 2's who use insulin and who had RNY
I did not find my weight loss rate to be slower than anyone else. Preop I was taking 300 units of insulin. I am now taking about 30 units. I am at goal and still losing.
Congratulations on your loss thus far!! By the way, this is not an updated picture of me, I am much smaller now. I keep having trouble uploading a new picture.
