thoughts on "poop yourself thin" comments
most of us have heard/read the comments that DSers "poop themselves thin".... posts made by non-DSers (regardless of which other procedure they had)
ponder this:
unless the weight is removed via surgery (likeorgan removal, a radical belt-lipectomy, liposuction or severe abdominoplasty), ANYONE who loses weight is doing so by pooping (and/or peeing) themselves thin!
calories are a function of thermogenics... one calorie is the energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of water (approx 16 oz) by one degree (though I forget if it's one deg. F or C).... in terms of actual weight loss, if your body burns more than it ABSORBS (called a calorie deficit) then you will lose weight... how rapidly depends on the amount of deficit over a period of time. The standard belief is that for every 3500 calorie deficit, you will lose one pound.
When you absorb (or restrict intake of) fewer calories than you burn... or burn more than you absorb (or allow intake of)... you lose weight because now your body is burning its own supply of stores (fat) to make up for the deficit.
how does that relate to what you see when you step on the scale? anything not absorbed (and even non-ops and restriction-only WLS don't absorb 100% of everything) has to be expelled.... when your cells burn fuel (food or stored fat) for energy, there is a waste involved... it's a living organism... at least part of what goes in must come out.... by either poop or pee.
long story summarized simply?
if you eat 2 pounds of food per day (WHAT food is irrelevant) and expell 3 pounds worth of poop/pee, then guess what? you're losing a pound per day.
eat 2 pounds, but only poop/pee 1 pound? looks like you're gaining to me.
in otherwords, the weight just doesn't magically disappear, or evaporate from the body (well, non-measurable amounts of perspiration might evaporate on a really hot day if you want to get picky)
and to put it in perspective.... the average SPEED of weight loss is about the same for DS and RNY in the first 6-12 months.... some even say the first 6 mo or so the RNY loses faster due to the much smaller pouch and slower transition to "regular" foods.... so yes, I pooped myself thin... and SO DID YOU.
at least part of what goes in must come out.... by either poop or pee.so yes, I pooped myself thin... and SO DID YOU.
<--VERY GOOD POINT! I am PROUD to acknowledge that "I" belong to the "POOPING MYSELF THIN GROUP"! Hey, I have a thought here...since we ALL POOP....WLS or not....it appears to me that ANYONE can poop themselves thin...YES???? Not just the WLS people huh???
I think this is a very important fact. Something everyone should understand. We poop alot during the first 6 months, have issues with different food, then our bodies begin to adjust. There are things like a 8" sub with everything including the bread that would have killed me during those first few months . Now at almost 2 years out, not much bothers me. I'm sure if I ate a carton of regular ice cream I would be miserable. But I don't have that kind of capacity and although I love the first several bites of food, I get full and satisfied pretty darn fast. If I ate a dozen Krispy Kremes I would probably be in the ER dehydrated. They really affect me but can be used for good when I'm constipated. It is true that we are the poopers during the fast weight loose window, but we are definitely eating a lot more than those who have had the other WLS. But once we learn the rules and how OUR bodies are gonna react, we have control.

I agree Starry, I eat between 2500 and 3000 calories per day. There is no starving here, but there also aren't the pooping (or as in my case barfing) issues anymore unless I do something really stupid. I go twice in the morning and that is that. The last stupid move, a brat followed by 3 pieces of sweet corn soaked in butter. Two and I would of been fine, but that 3rd about killed me with gas. Live and learn . . .

Yeah, I'm sure I am pooping myself thin as is anyone else who is losing a large amount of weight. I mean that's the natural progression of things. When we eat, the food is processed through our bodies and what we don't need from it has to be expelled in some form, so we become full of "sh&*" and have to get rid of it some way. So what!?!?!?!?!? WE'RE LOSING THE WEIGHT! THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS, PEOPLE!!!!
