I am 3 months out.     I meant a diet soda not regualar soda.   Just also, wondering on the straw it would probably make my drinking water I bit faster.      Thanks in advance ...

Soda drinking is one of those areas where surgeons disagree.  I was served diet Sierra Mist while still in the hospital.  I drink diet pepsi a lot.  So I have to ask what does your particular surgeon say about soda drinking?

Pour the soda over ice to let go of some of the bubbles and give it a try, nice and slow.  It was around 3 months that I could tolerate a little.  As for the straw for everything else, absolutely!

My surgeon does not prohibit drinking moderate amounts of sugar-free soda or the use of a straw.  He does, however, suggest limiting the amount of carbonated beverages when eating in order to leave room for protein in the stomach.

I prefer most of my liquid to be carbonated, especially water, but have been pretty good at cutting back.  I am also concerned that the use of sugar substitutes seems to be linked to weight gain.  (How many of us were hooked on Diet Coke before surgery?  Quite a few, I'll bet.)

One thing I do to drink flat beverages, such as low-cal grape juice, is to cut it with diet ginger ale.  That gives me some of carbonation's zing, and also cuts down the amount of carbs I might otherwise take in if the juice were at full strength.  So the combination minimizes the problems with both beverages.

My surgeon says no carbonation as the carbonation can cause a twisted bowel. Yes, he said that. Here I was looking forward to be able to drink diet Pepsi Max after surgery in a few months as it gives me a lift and I don't get so sleepy at work. I can get of it. I got off of all diet sodas before gastric bypass just fine, but my bf likes his diet pepsi and I have one diet pepsi max several times a week.

I am making sure you all understand itis det, I have heard that even diet sodas are bad for you? I know some of  you do imbibe in carbonation drinks with no problem. Soooooooo what do you do?

I am almost 3 months out and started drinking diet soda about a week ago.  It sits just fine with me.  I have been drinking with a straw since I was 4 days out from surgery with no problems at all.

I have found a direct correlation between drinking carbonated beverages and bladder urgency though.  Because of this I am choosing to limit my soda intake.

I've been drinking with a straw since the day I came home from the hospital! It just makes drinking much easier for me - especially when I mix up a protein shake that gets frothy (I can just stick in a straw and skip all that froth at the top).

As for soda, I was just told not until my stomach has healed, so I will give it a few weeks, at least. By 3 months, I'm sure you're pretty well healed!

I drank with a straw with no problem at 3 months out. At 4 months out, I now have 1 diet soda per day with no problem. Good luck to you!

Give the soda and the straw a try. If you get a bellyache, don't try it again for a while.
