This has been discussed before, but I thought it might be helpful to bring it up again for newbies, recent post-ops and anyone else struggling with protein. Personally, I find it painstaking to weigh and measure food, so I count my daily protein by eyeballing portions.

Here's a list that I've culled from several different sources, providing visual guidance on various protein portion sizes.

This amount of Protein                              Is about the size of a...
1 ounce of poultry, meat, tofu                     Matchbox
3 ounces of poultry, meat, tofu                  Deck of cards, bar of soap
8 ounces meat, poultry, tofu                       Slim paperback book
3 ounces of fish                                          Checkbook, iPod
1 ounce of cheese                                  Four dice, your thumb
2 TBSP peanut butter                                  Ping pong ball
1 cup yogurt                                                  Baseball or tennis ball
1 ounce of nuts                                          About a handful

I find this especially helpful when measuring cheese and peanut butter. Hope someone finds this useful!

Hi, Jenna -- Months of slavery to my food scale have given me a better eye than I used to have. I remember trying unsuccessfully not to laugh the first time (years ago)  a nutritionist showed me her stash of properly-portioned plastic steaks, potatoes and so forth. Now, I get a kick out of explaining to dinnermates, as I weigh my meat portion, that I'm not worried about getting too much, but about getting enough!
