How long did you need help after DS

I'm curious to know how long you all had help around the house after DS. My situation is a little tough and I'm trying to sort it all out.

My DH moved to Charleston back in August for a new job. My girls and I aren't moving until my oldest graduates (for about 463 different reasons, it just whats going to work best for all of us right now). Anywho, he gets sick time and vacation time BUT since his job is so new he really doesn't want to take too much time off right away.

I originally wanted to have surgery December 27th. He would be off extra for Christmas and New Years and stick a few sick days in there and he could stay here with me for almost 2 weeks. But a wrench got thrown into that mix when he found out that he has to report for 2 weeks of Navy training starting Jan 3rd. So he would  have to go back to Charleston on the 2nd, 6 days after my surgery. The pro to this is his job is pretty slow the week between Christmas and New Years so he wouldn't really be missed as much. Plus they know we are living apart and it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for him to stay home a little extra during the holidays. It's just that 6 days that has me worried. My mom and aunt will be around to help if I need them and my oldest is here to help with the younger girls, it's just that I'd really prefer my husband to be here with me :(

Now I'm thinking about maybe I should do it earlier, maybe the week before, week of, or week after Thanksgiving. DH could combine his sick time with the holiday and be here 2 weeks. Will I really NEED him here for 2 weeks? I would pu**** off until after his training but if we go much further in the calendar my daughter's sports seasons start and I really don't want to be a fresh preop travelling long distances to take her to games.

So what do you all think? Have the earlier surgery and have him here for 2 weeks but he'll be missed at his new job more, or have the surgery at the end of December when he won't be so missed at his new job but only have him for 6 days? Thanks guys!!

I have two small children and while my mom was here to help out, I didn't need to much help after a week..   really about day 6 actually.  I went back to work a week out and did good with that, I was a little tired but did great overall.

Good luck!

My surgery was open and I have 2 young kids (1 and 4 at the time). I had help for the first week then week 2 was only when i needed it. I didn't have any problems taking care of the kids and myself after the first week

It's hard to say; depends on what you mean by help around the house.

Barb was very much a hovering angel with me for at least 6 weeks. But you have to remember, I'm old and had a real rough long surgery because it was a revision and I had really screwed up guts.

do you think your weight loss was slower because of your previous surgery? I mean I read something recently about if you had a previous weight loss surgery your body could already be conditioned to a different metabolism and weight loss coud be different or slower in the subsequent surgery. I notice it's been 2 years for you . .I am now doing the pre-op and going forward for a revision from the VBG to the DS like you had. I am going to Husted in Phoenix. I just wondered if you experienced a slower loss than hoped for or expected. I am hoping I dont as I really want to get a lot off sooner rather than later to avoid having to get my knees replaced!

Hi Zuzu,

I had read about the slower weight loss for revisions too, but I don't think mine was slow; I lost almost 50 pounds my first month. However, it slowed after that and then I stalled for two months, lost again, stalled again, lost again and then at about a year out, stabilized. I stated at 283 lost to 189 and have been hovering between 190 & 195 ever since. I would like to lose another 10-15 pounds, but it's not a big enough a deal to get motivated enough to really work at it.

I think we're all so different, it's impossible to predict what your weight loss will be like. But I wouldn't worry about it if I were you; the DS is powerful and you are going to lose the excess weight. All you have to do is eat your protein, get your fluids in and take your vitamin and mineral supplements and you will do great.

Have you spoken to Dr. Husted about what he's going to do about making your stomach into a sleeve? I had a conversation with him about this about a year ago and at that time his thinking and practice was to leave some with a RNY pouch in place and just do the intestinal part of the DS. I didn't discuss anything about a VBG revision with him, but his thinking about leaving a pouch intact would cause me a major concern. There's no way I would submit to another WLS of any kind that was going to leave that damn pouch. Dr. Husted is without a doubt an extremely talented surgeon and is capable of doing excellent work; just make sure you know and agree with what he is planning to do with your surgery.

Best wishes,

Kerry

yes he specifically explained how he has done many of these revisions and explained step by step how he undoes the pouch and dissects the silastic ring and makes the pouch part of the top of the sleeve. He does it all laproscopiclly which surprised me! (He knows I have been on this forum a lot so we didnt discuss at all the things like this that I have read here or his unhappy patients back in the areas he left abruptly, tho I am sure he figures I know . .) I am really looking forward to not feeling plugged up or vomiting when I try to eat normally. I have what he described as the "soft food syndrome." Hell I thought I invented it! If it doesnt go down I dont even try it anymore. It will be nice to be able to eat meat & vegetables without barfing like I have for 25 years. I'll be glad to give up the sweets I live on to be able to eat regualr food easily - eventually. I know it will take time to get back to that! Husted seems very astute to me and I am impressed with him. I am really looking forward t doing this now!

Unless you have unusual problems, you shouldn't need much personal help. You will need help with your young ones as you shouldn't lift much at all to prevent a hernia early out. Have your snack, drinks and small meals planned ahead of time and easy to get to. You should do fine.

Are you having open or lap? Have you bounced back quickly from other surgeries or childbirth? Your mom, aunt and older daughter will be there to assist you. I think you should take all these factors under consideration to help with your decision. I had lap, and am a fast healer and had no small children, so I really had no real issues after surgery. The only thing that slowed me down was that I had a drain and had to be careful not to pull it.

I have a VERY busy toddler, she barely sleeps (really, really, REALLY?  ugh) and NEVER sits down, not even to eat- she is always on the go.  Busy, busy, busy.  Did I mention she is B.U.S.Y?  She is also a little monkey- she climbs everything, including the baby gates (the extra tall metal ones that are over 4' tall) we have up to "slow her down".  No, they don't stop her, they just take her a minute to climb over and make enough noise that I can "run, go, get" before she creates a disaster.  Anyways...

DH had plenty of time to take, but he only wanted to take a week so we could still go on our two annual vacations with the rest of his time (or God forbid for complications).  I'm thankful that my father is a Government employee with over 35 years of service and healthy as a horse, as he has well over 2000 hours of sick leave.  And, my mother has a flex schedule and is able to work from home or take days as needed.  I had my hubby home the first week, my mom & dad split the second week, and my MIL and sister popped over a few times the third week just to get my daughter out and "run her" more than I could.

*I* personally did not need help for myself at all.  I was even fine in the hospital to get around and do my own self care.  Heck, I even picked up and cleaned my hospital room...  I had pre-made meals and frozen them, and my sister, mom, MIL and cousin all made us some wonderful meals too.  There was NO shortage of food round here.  I just did a deep clean of the house the week before my surgery, and then kind of let it go while I was recovering.  I was back to full housekeeping duties by the 3rd week out.  So really, the only reason I needed help was to entertain and be active with my munchkin.

I would think, if you have your mom, aunt and older one around to help, you will be just fine :)  I totally understand the "wanting DH" though, and I think it would be really nice if he could take whatever time he can to be with you and the kids to help with the transition and normalization of things.  It's a big surgery, and a huge life change, having as much normalcy will be beneficial, to all of you.
