Can post op DS'er handle a soda pop?
That is one of the beauties of the DS. You can have carbonated drinks, however, my surgeon said refrain for 6 months, which I did. I thought it would be heck giving them up but I really didn't want or crave them...(like I do now!) They deplete your body of calcium so be careful with them. Even though I could drink regular drinks now, I LOVE diet coke! I'm trying to cut back to one a day but I think there is crack in them.

With the DS: there is no stoma, so no stoma strictures; there are no limitations (other than volume) against drinking before, during or after meals; 80% of ingested fat is malabsorbed; 98.9% of type II diabetics are CURED of this devastating disease, with data showing stable cure over 10 years out; there is the best average weight loss and most durable (average 76% excess weight loss going out 10 years) of all of the bariatric surgeries. That's why I had a DS!
Here's a new flash for ya; NUT's don't know squat about the DS or what we need to eat. Don't listen to anything they say, unless you verify it here. It's pretty amazing really how a medical pro can be so clueless, but it's true when it comes to the DS.
As far as carbonation goes, it seems to bother a few people, but it's never bothered me; I started sipping Diet Coke at about 3 months out and nowadays I probably average 3, 12oz cans a day.
