So the NUT said that post DS your stomach can't handle carbonation from soda.  I drink a little diet ginger ale almost daily right now b/c it helps to settle my stomach.  So post DS do you think I'll have to give that up?

Your mileage may vary, but I drink about 2-3 Diet Cokes a day. I started doing that at about 6 months out.

Not forever. Might be best at first to not drink it as the bubbles might be too much for a healing tummy, but personally I never had a problem drinking soda and I drink diet soda all the time.

ETA: if you like to drink ginger to settle your stomach, you might try ginger tea right after surgery.

I drink sugar free ginger ale, but quite honestly I have to flatten it and remove most if not all of the bubbles. Most of the time I dilute it with water or put a lot of ice in it and let it sit so it dilutes. I can't really handle the bubbles. I end up reguritating them.

my surgeon advised me to give Diet Ginger ale a try as my stomach was very nauseous. I now have some Diet Ginger ale once a week to help my tummy and I have no problem. I can't drink much but the little bit I do drink sure helps.

At 3 1/2 yrs out a little soda over ice. Can't drink it straight from a can or bottle. The carbonation doesn't settle well.

It might be iffy at first, though you might get away with stirring the ginger ale down nice and flat. Or try ginger tea for a similar effect--even more effective if you steep fresh ginger.

But I was back to drinking diet soda by around three months out and now drink it daily, four years later.

for the first couple months I couldn't even handle a sip.  Now I can drink about 6oz over ice.  I belch a lot but that does not deter me :)  my poison of choice is caff free diet Pepsi at the moment.  I never liked it before surgery.

Warm herbal teas felt good on my tummy post op.  I love Bigelow's Plantation Mint and Sleepy Time by Celestial Seasonings.
