Question

I have been lurking on here trying to see if anyone has run into this problem.  I had my revision to DS two years ago and the only thing I wish is that I would have had the DS first.  I am extremely happy with the surgery.  Here is my question:  has anyone had low red blood counts without having any vitamin or iron deficiencies.  My RBC is 2.97 (4.20-5.40), HGB is 9.5 (12.0-16.0) and HCT is 29.5 (36.0-48.0).  I have had this problem about two years now and I have seen three different hematologists and no one seems to know what is wrong.  The hematologist I am currently seeing wants me to come back at the end of May and check my blood again and if it is the same he is doing a bone marrow biopsy.  In October my HGB was 10.9 so this is a significant drop in six months.

I would change the title of your post to something more specific... more people who might know about your question might read it.

Anyway, I hope you find a solution!

I agree with Sarah Anne. You want the vets to reply. You might want to post all your most recent labs for their review and you vitamin regimen.

My hgb is a tad low, almost 2 years since i had my DS with Dr. keshishian. The latest draw shows hgb at 10.4 **** 15.7), hematocrit 32.8 (35-46), RBC 3.21 (3.5-5.5) and MCV high at 102.1 (80-99). I still am not sure what MCV is or does.  that was beginning of Feb. '11. So the hematologist is going to order an iron infusion set for me with Feraheme. I posted earlier today about the infusion and questions about Feraheme. No one has responded. I am surprised that you have not had an iron infusion already? Any talk of that before a a bone marrow biopsy ?.

MCV is the volume of red blood cells.  If they are too big, it can be a signal that your cells have difficulty maturing.  Folate and B-12 help with RBC maturation, so it can be a signal that you are low in one of these vitamins.  You are not tooo high though, so it may be fine.

My iron is now low.  So an iron infusion would not help.  Thanks, Fran
