Blood Sugar
Hi All
I have a question that I hope you can help me with. Today has been a crappy day for me, I have been feeling tired and I am still having the after effects of the chili that I made the mistake of eating the day before yesterday. As a matter of fact I was up most of the night last night still with gas and diarhhea (hope that is not too much info).
So aside from all that and being tired I was feeling a bit shakey and decided to take my blood suger. I still have the Dex thing from when I had gestational diabetes. Well it read 71. Now I am wondering , is that too low? What are the normal ranges? Thank you so much for any help.
By the way, my little guy turned 2 today so it really sucked feeling like this. There was so much more I wanted to do.

Actually, normal ranges for people without diabetes can vary as much as 70-110, 60-120 -- it depends a bit -- but 80 would be a good, healthy reading.
Pre-diabetes is a fasting sugar of 100.
As a Type II diabetic whose sugar is not well-controlled by meds (hence my main desire for the DS), I start feeling shaky at anything below 80, and I've gotten as low as 68 and felt like passing out. That's because my body is just not used to my glucose levels being low.
I'm sorry you felt so crappy but congratulations to you and your little one.

Some people tolerate BS that low with no problem. Others do feel shakey at that level, especially if they usually run higher. If you had diarrhea, I am betting you are dehydrated and potassium(electrolytes in general even) depleted. Got any Pedialyte or Gatorade? Drink some and I am betting you will feel better. Plain water is better than nothing. Have a banana and a few chips. Something salty/high in potassium. Adding the salts will help you hold on to the water.
Have you treated the diarrhea? Do you have Imodium?
Hope you feel better!
Thank you everyone for your advice. I was starting to get worried but no one seems to think it is serious. I seem to have diarhhea a lot at nite, it disturbs my sleep but during the day i dont go. I hope that goes away soon. I havent taken anything for the diarhhea, I didnt know if I should. But I have been very bad with fluids for the past few days. I have been working a lot and really falling behind with it. I never thought that might effect my blood sugar.
Thanks again

i average between 100 and 110, a1c of a 5, when i drop to 70 i get light headed, at 50 i cant hold a consistant conversation, when i go over 125 i take a starlix to pu**** back down, but i test every 15mins until it stablilize at my confort zone of 100-110, Your dex pack have an expiration date, so your numbers may not be accurate, assuming that they are now 2plus years old. you may want to call bayer help line, and ask for a test bottle, they are also upgrading the old dex 1 with a new dex 2 meter and gave me adata cord for the computer free.
Hi,
I had my surgery a few days before you, and at first when I came home, I had a bit of gas, and almost constant diarhhea whenever I went. I was extremely week and had trouble with food at first as well, and ate alot of yougart, pudding, jello, and popsiciles.... etc. (lot of carbs here).
Anyway, as I progressed and healed, I cut back on that type of stuff till I was only eating something like that only once a day. I tend to snack now more on protein bars, or mixed nuts or sometimes peanut butter and crackers.
My other meals are pretty protein ship shape. My BM's are solid, almost normal, and I have no more gas than I had normally preop. I'm of the true belief that any bathroom problems we have are almost always going to be a function of what we eat..... so you may want to change what you are eating on a regular basis, try some different things and see how it helps.

who did your surgery?? are you part of a surgical support group or are you like many of us farther from your surgeon?
you are reallly close to me! I am over in Elmira
so I want to extend an invitation to our ObesityHelp support group---email me if you are interested and I will include you in our notices.
blood sugar is in the normal range-but the shakiness may be still from it or may be from being a bit dehydrated.
Late night poops-that is just the way my body works I go everynight between 4 to 6 AM. Personally I prefer to do my business at home so it is fine with me.
Loose stools are normal for many people with DS-speak to your surgeon about it. Many will advise you to take fiber-I know it sounds so wrong, we are used to thinking about fiber for constipation. In the DS patient it works differently-it helps to absorb some of the fluids in the stools and makes them more formed. I recommend benefiber or metamucil sugarfree. My preference is the benefiber-sugarfree and really taste free and very very little thickening of what you add it to. I do it both in the AM and before bed and it helped tremendously.
For me personally I stay away from anything that has beans in it-chili, pasta fagoule----------even if I do not eat the beans they have left their bean "evilness"in the broth---the gas is horrible and the stools definately worse. It is like dynamite for me.
gratitude is my attitude

Hi Amanda
Dr. Peters is my surgeon. I havent asked him about any of this because I figured I am so early out maybe some of the diarhhea issues would resolve themselves. I had my surgery on June 21st so I am closing in on 2 months. I think you are right about the beans, that chili had me going for 2 nights. I never knew one person could have SO much gas!!
In spite of everything yesterday was a good protein day for me. I wound up getting 158 grams of protein in and very little carbs. I feel better today and the scale says I have lost another 3 pounds. I wonder if there is a correlation?
I know I need to drink more and maybe the fiber would help me be able to sleep through the night. I will try it. And yes we are very close, you can count me in on the support group. Thank you everyone for your help!

Hey Civita,
You also mentioned not getting in all the fluids you should...dehydration, even a little, will make you feel that way.
I felt the same way today. I slept in, got up, went and got my hair cut, bought a birthday present, and by 2pm I finally had something to eat and drink....I was feeling shaky and dizzy. I think it was a combo of the not eating, drinking, and the high temperatures today.
After eating and getting in about 20oz water I felt much better. Hope you feel better soon.
With your diarhhea, are you eating more carbs than usual, sometimes cutting back on those will firm up the stools, or possibly add some metamucil or benefiber daily to help.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
