CPAP question

I'm going to cross-post this in the sleep apnea forum, but since it's such an inactive place, I thought I'd try here as well. I know there are a bunch of CPAPers here, too. My CPAP has developed a nasty habit of throwing water at me, and it's getting really annoying. I'm up this morning (one of my few this summer to sleep in) before either of my kids, only due to rain on my cheeks. I'm using distilled water - though gotta admit, I have used tap water on occasion when I've run out - but that shouldn't affect anything, should it? The water doesn't go through the machine, so there can't be mineral buildup in there. Am I missing something in machine/hose/mask maintenance? Or is it a machine setting that must be taken care of by the company who brought it to me? HELP! I really don't need to be watered - and I'm afraid I'll keep growing if this keeps happening! Beth

Hello Beth, HMMM. Do you have a heated humidifier? Could try adjusting the temperature. If the temp is high, but room is cool, that will cause more rain out of humidity. Is it actually draining around the mask to run on your cheeks? How about are you possibly over filling the humidifier? I work in a sleep lab, but don't have that much expereince with trouble shooing at home problems. Also there should be someone at your homecare company who could help figure out a solution. I wouldn't hestitate to call them as they probably field these kinds of problems regularly, and may know just the thing to fix it. Good Luck, and dry off !! Brenda S

Right you are..... dumb I are! Temp's going down tonight, and hopefully I'll wake up dry for a change! (At least I know which end is responsible for me waking up drenched ) I'm know I'm not overfilling, since I hate to have to lug home those gallon jugs of distilled water. I knew all my friends here could steer me in the right direction. Thanks, Brenda! Beth (reporting in from the rain forest)

Hey... once we have moved our data from our old profile to our new one, how do I then delete the old profile page? ? Jim

Beth, What you're describing is called "rain out". Sounds like you need a cozy over your hose. There's a great website that will answer all of your cpap questions. Go to cpaptalk.com----the people there are great. I learned so much from them when I first started my cpap treatment. Kathy R

I was actually thinking that might be the case (heated moist air condensing during the length of that long cool tube) but I forgot there's a heat adjustment!! DUH!!! I swear I wasn't like this before all my surgeries - does anesthesia kill brain cells? Of course, I can't tell my husband this, as he'll use it as ammunition against me in the War of the Thermostat. He thinks I keep the bedroom as cold as the fridge. Thanks Kathy - off to the trusty sewing machine to make a nice fleece cozy for the tube! Beth

Yes, it may be that the heat setting is too high. Call your service number and talk to them. "and I'm afraid I'll keep growing if this keeps happening!" ROFL!! Jeanie

Hey - I made the High Priestess of Funny Posts laugh!! This day just keeps getting better and better! Actually, I probably should've said that the rain is what's making those da** stray chin hairs pop up.... Beth

I have had that problem, apart from too much water in the bottle,i added a length of hose to allow it to be further away, but more important is to have it drape down from the machine and my face, createing a u of sorts, the condensed water will drain downward in the hose by gravity, of course if you overfill the vessel, and sleep long enough it will fill and gargle at you. Distilled water may cause iritation to the nose, it can be harder. if you dont need a water softner, you dont need the distilled water, or as i see it since i get the vessles free one a month from the insurance as maintence . no problem with tossing them .
