Topic: RE: weight gain and fibro
I've had fibro for 12 yrs now.  I have tried all kinds of medications. I weighed 180 after I gave birth to my 6th child. The fibro flared up after the birth. I went to the doctors and they prescribed me Trazodone for sleep and Celexa for depression. I gained 60 lbs. I can't seem to get the weight off after 8 yrs.(I have been on different meds through the 8 yrs)  I now weigh 250. I started looking into wls again but i am afraid of what will happen after the surgery (if I get approved). I guess I have to weigh the pros and cons. At least in the summer I would be able to do things with my kids and grandchildren.  I hope your surgery goes well and good luck!

Well I got lost in all that christmas wrapping paper but I have battled my way back!  LOL I have fibromayligia also and starteed on my jurney towards WLS, and that is how I found my MD for my fibro.  With my past few surgeries I had severe fibro flares so to try to control it I started to go to Fibro and fatugue Center Inc.  Dr. Loya worked me up and I signed up for a one year treatment plan.  I first walked in with a cane now I do not need one anymore !  When I first went in August I did not have any days with out some continual level of pain, now I have days where I only hurt when I take my braces off at night.  I can not tell you how much better I feel.  The fatugue is better- the fibro fog improved.( and the Dr's office actually knows hat that is !!)  I still have symptoms but I can now live with it instead of wish I wouldn't live long.  (There are several centers accross the US)
My throid medicine was wrong because my body was blocking some of it now I am losing weight ( have not had surgery as yet) with proper diet and I am more active as I feel better.  I do not think I could go off the disibility and go back to work but I feel good enough to volenteer to teach religion for 1 hour a week, which is more than I could do 6 months ago.
I found out one of the key things for me is getting REM sleep.  During REM sleep your body makes growth hormone as we get older we do not grow but it repairs our cells.  In fibromyalgia our mitochrondia (power house of our cells) is hurting and we need to help repair it.   There is no cure but it can be managed.

Topic: RE: Fibromyalgia& WLS linked???
My surgeon told me loosing weight even with WLS will not do any thing for fibro.  I ran out of my bed time pills ( combo of natural products) so I am taking generic Benedryl ( it comes in  liquid also ) , 25 mg at  half hour before bed and I sleep well and when I get up to use the bathroom I go right back to sleep.  My Fibro MD is very against my having surgery as the medicine is not absorbed as well and my pain may return.  Your Lupus may also cause some of your pain as it is very painful also.  You will probly need a specialist to determine the cause of your pain.  It sounds like you need to be worked up by a specialist, and they can  also give you information on what exams, xrays tests, ect you need before you apply again.
Fibro may be caused by many things, My specialist did over 30 blood test to check on what was effecting my immune system, I met a another women at the clinic that  had a heavy metal overload, I do not but my thyroid and adreanals were a few of the tings that were malfunctioning.
I was in that same place when I wound up making it half way down a hall and not being able to mov.  My  drove home was 30 minutes long and I would have to pull over to take a nap after a busy day working so I could make  it safley.  On my days off I would stay in bed 18 hours and days I worked I got out of bed to get ready for work and to let the dog out.  I would tell myself i am so tired I do not know how I was going to work the day.  I orked as a accute care RN so calling in was not an option most days.
The good news is I have not used my cane for a very long time and I have a ton more energy sleep well and have lostover 30# weight on my own.  I am looking forward to my life not dreading it,
Talk to a lawyer that works for disability cases see what he thinks.
Good Luck , may you have pain free days ahead.

I have to talk with you. I had WLS last June, 6 months ago and have lost 90 pounds. I thought I would be so much better, too. It turns out, i am even worse! No one in the family wants to hear that. They all want to hear that I am doing great! So frustrating. My fibro ha**** the roof! I've never felt so much pain so often in my life. I never sleep more than 40 minutes at a time and this is making it much worse. My doc won't give me anything like Lunesta or Ambien for sleep - he gives me Seroquel in low doses (usually used as an anti-psychotic) but good for sleep. This helps a little, but doesn't keep me asleep or help me reach REM.

i also have diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease and was diagnosed with Lupus years ago. I had applied for soc sec disability and was denied. I fought all rounds, 1, 2 and three and was denied all three times by the judge. Was anyone out there approved for soc sec disability for fibro? If so, can you provide some tips?

I can't go on like this much longer. My days are spent at work and nights and weekends are spent in jammies just getting rest. I have no social life anymore and no fun. It's all I can do just to survive.

Swimming in a warm pool is very benefical for fibro. I hired a trainer at my gym to  teach me exercises I can do. I can even jog in the water.  I lost 40 lbs over 2 years with swimming.  I hate to put my face in the water so she taught me how to swim with my face up.  I also just float and relax - great for destressing!  One time, however, I wasfloating and trying to completey relax every muscle in my body, and someone thought I was dead and called 911!  I had a hard time convincing them I was ok!

Evie-

I have both lupus and fibro. Nothing worked for the lupus except prednisone, whch helped push my weight up to a high of 405. I eas on the maximum doses of Plaquenil, and Cymbalta ( off-label for fibro at the time), then Lyrica was approved for fibro, and my doctor added that at maximum dose. None of it worked well at all, and the Plaquenil began to blur my vision, so I was taken off of that.

I had my DS (duodenal switch) on 2/25/09. I weighed 397 on surgery day. I now weigh 180. Plaquenil is now working to keep the lupus flares at bay, Lyrica and Cymbalta work together to control the fibro pain ( and the anti-depressant effect is nice). All doses of the medications were REDUCED post-op, which is strange, because the Ds is so much more malabsoptive than the RNY/gastric bypass, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth!

Before, I was in constant pain, and often bedridden for weeks at a time. I spent two consecutive Christmases in bed, taking Tramadol. Now, though my knees are still bad, I can walk pain and cane free with Synvisc-one injections and Voltaren Gel. My rheumy says that because of the weight loss, my knee replacements can be delayed for another 10 to 15 years, (I will be 53 on 1/17), and the joint pain can be treated medically. She says losing the weight took the pressure off my joints. I no longer have high blood pressure, and I can now get restorative sleep without my CPAP. Sleep studies have validated this.

I haven't had a severe flare of either lupus or fibro since after I lost my first 50 pounds. My doctor was afraid the trauma of the surgery would send me into a lupus flare, but the weight was going to kill me. The potential benefits outweighed the risks, just like with any medical treatment, that is something to consider.

One thing I do notice more now is hip pain, but I was warned about this, because, she says, with the weight loss. my hip joints now sit at a different angle, and the worn areas are out of alignment with each other, and that's what causes the pain. Not bad enough for replacements now, but I may need them when I'm older.

So...did the weight loss help? Absolutely! It does for some people, for others it doesn't do much. Can't promise that it will, but if you have other co-morbidities, it's worth a shot.

Be sure you research every surgery, and whether it's DS, RNY, LapBand, VSG or gastric plication, make sure you choose the surgery that's right for YOU.

Topic: RE: Sleep mask
One thing that I have found is that since I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and have gotten a CPAP machine my nights are so much better.

I also use a heated mattress pad and yes a heated blanket.  The warmth really soothes the muscles and I'm so much better in the morning.

I've had Fibro since 1979, way before it was even recognized as a disease.  PAIN, PAIN EACH AND EVERY DAY.  But on I go

Will never get back to my right weight but I need to lose a lot....
