Topic: RE: anti-inflammatory question
There are quite a few different meds for fibro and they are finding anti depressants work quite well so there should be lots of options for pain control besides what you are taking now. You may need to see a rheumatologist or go to a pain clinic to get the more current treatments but there are lots of options. Good luck to you!
Topic: RE: Help.. New fibro diagnosis- How am I suppose to handle this?
I completely understand. I have migraines, fibro and PMDD (PMS from hell). My children are 9 and 10 and I hate to see them worry about me, and try to take care of me. I take neurontin and cymbatla, which seem to help the fibro immensely. I take lorazapam at bedtime and generally sleep through the night. I go to a pain clinic and he's trying to help, but he has no concept of PMDD. My bad days are the 10 days before my period and first 2-3 days. Then I'm great for about 7-10 days. My cycle has gotten very unpredictable too. I have the same kind of days that you described, days I can function by taking perc 10's, excedrin, phenergan, and a sudafed, and days when that's not enough for the pain and I can't function at all, luckily I only have about 2 of those a month. I also have about 3 days where I have really bad depression, where I get very despondant, but the cymbalta has helped with that too.
My husband lost his job over 2 years ago, I've been a stay at home mom for 11 years. And now my family doesn't understand why I don't go back to work. So not only do I have the guilt from worry about my kids, my family (dad) is giving me more for not finding a job. You can't explain paralyzing pain to someone that hasn't expereinced it.
By the way, I just turned 40 this year. So, I should have a FEW good years left 8-)

Topic: anti-inflammatory question
I am currently weighing my options for WLS and attended an RNY seminar this week. We were told that we couldn't take any anti-inflammatory meds after the surgery because they cause ulcers. I currently take 15 mg of meloxicam every night as part of my fibromyalgia protocol and am a little worried about what I would do post-op. The Bariatric Coordinator told me to talk to my Surgeon about this issue which I am planning to do. I have my 1st consult scheduled for 12/7. I'm wondering what some of you do on a day-to-day basis to control your chronic pain? Any feedback you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Topic: RE: Pain meds after gastric bypass
I had rny in 10/04. I have migraines and fibro. I take neurontin for the fibro and it is a godsend. For the migraines I go to a pain clinic and take perc 10, or oxycodone, the next step past loratabs. And I agree it does wear off faster. And I build up a tolerance faster than I did before I had the surgery. The neurontin seems to help alot of my migraines too. I also have PMDD, which is PMS from hell. The migraines I get now are hormonal, they are about 10 days before my perios and the first 3 days of my period. So I can take 2 or 3 perc 10's a day for 2 weeks and then stop with no withdrawals. I'd take more, but I have to measure them out so that I don't run out. Good Luck, Melanie

A pain management clinic is the best place to go! No it isn't just thinking the pain away, they will teach you things besides drugs that you can use but they can also help find the right drugs to treat your fibro. There are several drugs for fibro, lyrica, cymbalta and savella and they can also add others if needed. Most general PCPs don't want the responsibility of prescribing and monitoring narcotics in their patients so now they send you to a pain clinic where they specialize in treating all kinds of pain. I go to one for my fibro and degenerative arthritis in my back. After years on narcotics I recently had a spinal stimulator put in and am completely pain free in my back now. They are up to date on all the newest treatments. They should also understand about bypass malabsorption or if not can confer with your bariatric surgeon to learn that you don't absorb meds like other people. Wish you the best and hope they help with the pain!

Topic: Migraine Headaches
Does anyone here have a history of migraines. If so, has WLS made a difference in how frequently or how bad the headaches are? What kinds of meds do you take that are not NSAIDs? Do you take any vitamins or suplements that help? I'm looking at WLS in Feburary and migraine pain managment is high on my list of concerns. Thanks.
Topic: Pain meds after gastric bypass
Hi Everyone, I have a question I was wondering if anyone that takes pain melds find that the pain meds wears off faster then they did before your surgery? I found that i get a lot more brake though pain since the surgery then before .After about 3 hours I'm in more pain. Some days it feels like i have not even taken any pain meds. I had the surgery 7 years ago. My doctor don't believe that gastric bypass makes any difference. I am having to go to pain management. Since the pain med don't seem to help for very long he don't want to treat me for pain. I been taking loratabs 10s 3 times a day for 8 years and he took me off cold turkey. But, Didn't have any withdraws from the loratabs. You would think i would. After all this time. I have other medical conditions other then Fibromyalgia. I don't know what pain management is like and what they do. Someone told me you think your pain away. I will find out soon enough i guess. I just wanted to know if anyone else has experience this also. Please help me with this if you can. thank you, Debra

I worried about the RNY due to the NSAIDs and talked to him about it and steroids, because I get pneumonia fairly often. He informed me that I could still take my NSAIDs but not without his knowledge and I would have to make sure I had some food on my stomach. He said I could do the steroids too. Now it could be that I won't need the NSAIds once I lose more weight. Anyway, if he says it will be OK I am going to take him at his word.

Thank You for responding. I went to the surgen today and tried to explain my dilemma, Dr Johnson listened to some things I said but told me that he did not feel that absorption would be a problem then I answered that "isn't that why post op patients get megga doses of vitamins?" I think he kinda did not know how to answer me as I tried to explain my concerns and the opposite ends of the spectrum my primary and fibromyalgia Dr's are at. He kept cutting me off when I tried to explain and he came up with have your fibromyalgia Doctor write a letter stating why she feels you should not have it done. So I will call her in the AM for that. I think I was taking to much of his time. I may call for a second opinion. I asked about a gastric sleeve but he did not know if insurances in this area covered them, that would be a better option as I am trying to wean off the celebrex now ( just realized it was an NSAID). If I can't get off of that it is another issue.
I am down to 288 with my braces and shoes on so lost more than the 5% needed for the lap band so he suggested that we try to get insurance clearance for that, although he would rather do a RNY with my BMI.
He also said I was a high risk due to my clotting history. I actually told him how I felt when I started this venture. I felt that I would not live through the surgery, but that I hurt so bad from the fibro and the arthritis I did not care if I died during surgery.
Now that my pain is under control I do not want it to come back. I am able to do more now due to decreased pain so I want answers before I decide if and what surgery to have.
