Topic: RE: all these meds...and work?
I don't work outside the home but I really don't have much trouble with side effects after the first couple of days.I take morphine and oxycodone. I drive and take care of the house and usual business. You probably wouldn't want to put me in charge of a nuclear facility but otherwise I do pretty well. Maybe it isn't the drugs but the fibro fog that so many of us have. It makes it difficult to concentrate and focus for lots of folks. I don't get it too bad unless I'm very tired but some folks can barely get thru the day because of it. Good luck and do check with your doc about it.

Topic: all these meds...and work?
good morning and hi!
I've been lurking off and on and have a question for anyone who's willing to answer.  how do you manage to work along with all the meds your pains have you taking?  i've been reading about the cymbalta, vicodin, lyrica,... and the rest of the attempts at controlling the pain.  i've gone thru alot of the same meds - but - how do you manage to work with the brain fog and the other side effects of those drugs?
I know I need to talk to my doctor about this. I'm getting in trouble at work because of my lack of focus.  But am wondering if there's anything in particular you do to get thru the workday without making mistakes and acting like an idjit?
   thanks, ahead of time

50!  I've heard that some doctors make their patients lose weight to do the surgery if they are over 50.  Your insurance company needs a little prodding.   My first denial came through with the reason of "your blood pressure is being controlled with medicine."  The day before I received that letter it was 180/106.  My Dr's office wrote the appeal, pointing out how much all of my health issues were going to cost over the long run.  We listed High blood pressure, sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and hormonal imbalances.  They just ignored all of the other issues in their first denial.  I had a BMI of 38 when I qualified.  I lost a lot of weight on the pre op diet and was worried about disqualifying myself, but my doctor told me that the insurance company would never see another weight.  Keep fighting!  Get your Dr to write a letter, tell the insurance company how much it will cost them if they don't let you have the surgery, and keep going to all of these appointments so it will cost them.  I realize that it will cost you too, but make them pay for their denial.   That way, you'll have a history.
Good luck and hang in there!  It took me a year to get my surgery.

Topic: RE: best WLS for people with fibromyalgia

I don't really think it makes any difference since WLS doesn't usually make much if any difference in our fibro. Fibro is a muscle and nerve disorder so weight loss doesn't impact it one way or another. Now if some of your pain is from pressure on your joints that will improve with the weigh loss but as far as what type surgery that's something you have to decide based on the surgery itself and what type you are willing to do. Some folks don't want a terribly invasive surgery where others don't mind if it gets them weight off. I wish you the best on your surgery but in all honestly don't expect it to help your fibro.

I really appreciated what you had to say about the course you had to take to get diagnosed.  I'm an RN also, and manage a large hospital unit.  Being in the medical community doesn't help much when a person has an illness that doesn't fit into the usual diagnoses.  I really feel bad for all of us in this situation.   I've pretty much had to figure out for myself what works and doesn't.  The wheat intolerance was a real eye-opener.  Who would have thought that diet could play such a large role in how a person feels and functions.  I can almost feel normal if all wheat and sugars are eliminated from my diet. Even oatmeal will cause a flare up - a little rice is ok.   I've been tested by an allergist, and it's not allergic reactions - it's a food intolerance.   Eating out is a challenge.  I was doing better for quite some time, then, got complacent, started eating a lttle this, and that - and it didn't seem to bother me much, so thought maybe I could handle it.   Crazy thinking!  It was too much and so for the past 2-3 wks , am really paying for it and hurting all over, can't do much at all, not even work this week -yikes.   So, it's back to basics, mostly veggies.  life passes you by when you hurt.  All the Best to all of us...

Glad you're feeling better, if you're like me once I finished crying I got mad and got busy. Most ins. co. go by your original weight when you started the procedure and I've never heard of one insisting on a BMI of 50! That's just crazy. You might also check into Obesity Law.com I think they help with situations like yours, good luck and keep on pushin'!

Yes, I have co-morbids....  And my starting BMI (the one the surgeon reported to the insurance) was over 40.  Ive been on the bariatric ketogenic diet since November, and have lost over 25lbs which is why my BMI is lower now.  The insurance Co said my BMI had to be over 50, which contradicts what my benefit handbook states- so Im fighting on that alone.

I am doing a bit better today.  Just trying to reframe my thinking...

Thank you for the support everyone.  It really helps to vent to people that get it.

I understand your disappointment I too was denied (on a technicallity) for my surgery and was devastated. Try to relax and regroup, try to find a different pain clinic or doc. See if you can come up with some co morbidities because most ins. companys require a BMI of 40 with no co morbids or a BMI with several co morbids. Do you have arthritis, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes or any other medical issues. I hope you are doing better today, trust me we all have these days.
