I have a letter from my insurance company but Amy says no?
RNY on 12/18/12
I am holding a letter from Ford Service center at BCBSM where I am insured. I am insured through my husband's employer (Ford) with BCBSM. It says this on my insurance card. The letter from them says that with a BMI over 50 the 6 month supervised weight loss is waived; however, Amy says that since I live in Indiana I have to go by what Anthem says. WHY? I am not insured by Anthem. I'm insured by BCBSM through Ford. Anthem wants me to do a 6 month diet. Does anyone know anytyhing about this?
I agree that it is confusing. I am not sure how to help you. I was told by many BCBS representatives that I only had to do a "medicall supervised diet" there was no time limit, no 6 months or anything, but my Diet Dr, Dr. Brooks said she isn't taking any chances, so I am still on my diet and should be done by next month.
What I would do is call your insurance company directly and see what they want, and actually have them fax the letter to your doctors office, or have Amy talk with them Directly. That is just me, so I am not too sure. I'm sorry

Hi,
I really understand your frustration. I had to go thru 12 MONTHS of Dr. supervised weight loss with it being recorded & sent into the Ins. plus see a therepist. My hubby is insured by BCBS also( out of Pittsburgh,PA.),which I found out Anthem is the controlling partner of. I had to go to 10 Support Group meetings with documentation, also.
The best thing you can do is follow whatever your Ins. requires. It will go quickly, and you'll be glad you did. Go to as many Support Group meetings as you can- they are so informative and helpful.
i wish you all the best- don't give up- you'll be joining us on the Losers Bench before you know it!

my pcp doc wrote a letter that stated i have followed a supervised diet plan for 6 months with some weightloss...but still is obese and would like to give me a referal for weightloss surgery....i was passed within days! if your doc is willing to work with you and you have medical notes that dates back maybe doc will help you out....mine was anthem....they tried to do the same thing to me....good luck!
I have anthem Indiana and I was supposed to go through 6 months supv diet, but I told my surgeon's office to submit my paperwork without it and see what happens. I was approved without doing the 6 months. BUT, I also had several comorbidities and had a letter from my PCP stating he thought I was a great candidate for surgery and he listed my comorbidities in the letter, and listed the past 5 years worth of weights. I was also able to submit 18months of WW meetings where I tried to do it on my own. So, my suggestion would be to have them send it off for approval, but in the meantime start doing the supv. diet that way if they deny you then you will already be on your way to competing their requirements. If you want a sample letter to take to your PCP just send me a private message and I will email it to you. I really think that the letter made a big difference in getting me approved so quickly. Hope this helps, Melissa
