Topic: RE: The Sleeve and Medicare
Well spoke with medicare today and they don't cover it. I am concerned because one of my medicaitons for another disorder cannot be dropped and there is an issue if the absorbtion time is altered. Waiting to speak with a specialist and hopefully will have more answers. But it looks like I will have to see about self-paying. Not worth the risks of messing with my medication. Tell your friend good luck and i wish her the best!
Topic: RE: Insurance denial reasons? BCBS of FL in particular.
Hi Ginger!!
Sorry to hear that you too were denied by BC?BS of FL. I have that insurance also. Here's what I learned, and maybe you already know this, but...each policy is written differently. Mine for example is employer driven which means my employer picks and chooses what she feels we as her employees will need. Unfortunately for me she does not believe in any sort of bariatric surgery and therefore covers NOTHING. I couldn't even appeal it. I did call BC/BS's 800 # on the back of my card and worked with a wonderful rep who did everything she could to push my request through. Sadly, it all came back to the choices my employer made. My overall experience with BC/BS was surprisingly nice, they went above and beyond to help me.
Hope this helps.

Topic: Financing?
Has anyone who has had WLS financed their surgery? Since my insurance does not cover any WLS whatsoever, my Lap Band surgery is looking pretty dismal at this point. Since I don't have a spare 18 k laying around I have no idea how I'm going to pay for this. My surgeon of choice does not offer any financing and requires everything upfront. There is another doctor in town that does do WLS, however from what my research tells me, he's not fit to carve a Thanksgiving turkey. Has anyone out there financed their surgery?
Topic: RE: UHC "Failed Weight Loss Attempt"
I am also trying to hold at a 40 BMI because I don't want to go lower (fear they will deny surgery below 40) BUT the mandatory 6 months weight loss program is confusing. If I lose weight, they will deny me...if I don't lose weight...they might deny based on the fact that I didn't lose weight on the program.
Topic: RE: UHC and support group requirement
I live in GA and have UHC, too. UHC sent a list of acceptable support groups to me, so I have it in writing that the one I chose is acceptable. The person who signs my support group attendance is not a medical professional, but they said that they had that person's name as the contact person for the group. A medical professional presents at each support group meeting.
If I were you, I would start attending a support group that is acceptable while you are waiting on the approval/appeal process. Just in case.....
BTW - what kind of support group were you attending?

Topic: RE: The Sleeve and Medicare
Thanks, I'd appreciate that. My friend has an appointment on April 5th and she's going to ask the dr and his staff then about medicare and the sleeve. I'll post when I find out from her.

Topic: RE: The Sleeve and Medicare
I too am trying to find out that answer. There seems to be a lot of debate on whether it does or doesn't, or what the restrictions are if it does. From what I understand, medicare doesn't PRE-approve anything. I have a call into my own docs office to see if I can get a little more information on it. I will pass along as soon as I hear something.

Anyone had Medicare cover their VSG (sleeve)??? Just wondering .. a friend of mine has medicare and we're wondering if it'll cover the sleeve but it's hard to read through their mumbo jumbo website. Any help would be nice.

Topic: RE: Insurance Help! Post Self-Pay VSG
I don't know if it's an automatic 5 year ban or not, but if you don't tell them, and they some how find out, you run the risk of having to pay back all of your medical expenses on that plan. If I were you I would be honest about the surgery.
P.S. How was your experience in Mexico? I was considering it myself because of my high deductible (10k). How much did you end up paying, including airfare and hotel?
