I want to know too - people keep posting that "of course, gum" is a no-no - but why? I haven't heard anything from my doctor about it - although I know swallowing gum is a huge no-no because it can get stuck... but is that the only reason?

The problem with gum is if you swallow it.  It could potentially obstruct the opening between the pouch above the band and the rest of the stomach below blocking it and any food from going through.  It could require surgery to remove.   I chew gum but I didn't swallow gum pre-surgery.   Tonya

Ever since that woman here had to have surgery to remove the swallowed gum, I have vowed never to chew it! I might swallow it by accident, no way!!

Like Taw, I've never swallowed it pre-op so there's no reason I would swallow it post-op. I chew a stick every day.

I chew gum all the time, it's an addiction and keeps me from eating other things when I am TOM. I've only accidentally swallowed a few times, and it scared me but nothing happened cause it was early as I was chewing so it was still kinda slippery so just slipped passed. Just be careful when do you chew gum. :) Kelli

Nothing at all wrong with gum! Chewing is an impt part of satiety (the physiological feeling of satisfaction), and will help a lot when we are "hungry". It also helps a lot when we are in the liquid phases after surgery. We recommend it to our clients. Just have a small enough piece that it will go thru the small stoma in case you swallow it - like 1/2 stick or one single Chiclet.  Don't swallow!  If you have had a habit of  always swallowing gum before, you should probably avoid gum now, to be safe. Swallowing might be too automatic. If you happen to swallow it, you'll likely barf it back. In my many years on the boards, I've heard of only one person who actually got gum stuck IN the stoma -and it was a big , sticky glob - It needed a removal by endoscopy. not a big problem., still surely not fun. Chew away! Sandy r

Hey Sandy: Okay...this may be a dumb question being that I have been banded now for over 2 months, but how would you define the "stoma"  Is it the opening that is left by the band that seperated the top and bottom of your stomach?   Thanks!
