I got into a debate with my 14 year old daughter tonight. I dont ever curse, but I do use the slang "pissed off" alot. My friend once told me it was a curse word also, and now my daughter said it bothers her because it is cursing. She said shes not allowed to say this in her classes. I agree that kids should not say it and that my kids are not allowed too, because it is an adult word, but I never classified it as cursing.  What do you think???

While it may not sound appropriate, I dont consider it profanity.  I teach six grade and "cursing" is considered profane language.  Pissed off is considered an inappropriate choice of words, but not profanity (at my school)......meaning they shouldnt be saying it,,,,but they arent going to get a referral for it!

I think it is vulgar, but would not classify it as cursing. I think it is not for kids to say though either.

I do say this phrase occasionally...but do remember back to my high school days....you know back with the dinosaurs...anyways....in the group of classmates I ran around with there was this one boy that would say that "urinates me off".....his theory was that it was the same as pissed me off.....I always think of that and him when I hear this phrase....just a thought.  Mary

I classify this one along with "crap" and "fart" (which we weren't allowed to say when we were growing up). They're not very nice, but I don't think it's cursing (or cussing, as we say here in Mississippi). I think it does appear in the Bible, but so do damn, hell and ass. Anyway, I think it's an adult word, but not cursing. And if the 14-year-old gives you any lip about it, just say "Because I Said So -- and so do my friends on OH!"   End of debate!

If MY daughter had told me that bothered her, I'd be down on my knees with joy.  I don't think it is cursing, but it is improper and it would be nice of you to say 'I respect that it bothers you so I am going to try to change it to "ticked off".   yeah yeah, it MEANS the same thing, but you are showing respect towards your daughter's sensibilities.

Thanks for all the replys. I do think I am going to change it to "ticked off" for her. If something is bothering her this much then it should not be a big deal for me to change it. Its only words, right?  How hard can it be to change?

Points of view as amusing.  We have a great couple that came from Seattle to Boston and volunteered (sp) to run children's church...  my son, much younger then, said Mom... Mr A swears when he talks to us....  I'm like ?????   So I approached my Pastor laughing and let him know he will have to explain us Bostonians....  now apparently "wicked" as in wicked awesome... is a no no to some outsiders....  but we do not say $uck in church!!!  LOL it ended up being funny.  But I wouldn't want my kid saying that or "pi$$ed off", although I have heard my 16 yo say worse in a fit of anger.

I dont know if you would define it as a "curse", but whether is qualifies as a curse or not, its gross to hear that coming from a kids mouth. I once dated a guy that had an 8 yr old son. the kid thought it was ok to say the word "Freakin" all of the time..,  you know, like "That guy is a freakin' idiot", etc.. Everytime I heard him say that, I wanted to fatten his little lip... but the guy I was with ( his dad ) thought it was just fine. The kid also used to use the Phrase "What the crap?"... He would use it the way an adult would use the phrase "What the F**K?" The reason he used that phrase all the time was because both of his parents CONSTANTLY used the F word and always said "What the F**K?", so he figured he would use the junior version of that. When him, his dad and I used to go to the dads sisters house, the sister would have a FIT whenever the 8 year old said "Freakin" or "What the crap".. and I loved every minute of it.. somebody had to teach the kid, cause mommy and daddy sure werent. Is it a crime? no... but what happened to the "Leave it to Beaver" days, when people ( ESPECIALLY KIDS ) were polite, had manners, had decorum... certain things were not said in the open...there was still privacy, manners, discretion...      I think I was born in the wrong era. I am only 39, but the things that come out of most peoples mouths-- especially kids--- and the topics that people will discuss out in the open and in front of strangers..  ugh...   gross. I am no prude, not  a puritan...  I just dont want to hear about your episiotomy or the boil on your hubbys butt.... ( I mean out in public.. a message board where you can choose whether or not to read certain posts is different.. we are here to discuss medical issues, etc.. so I am not referrring to this board ) I dont want to know what color your babys bowel movement was this morning.. ( yes, I hear these things, loud and clear, from the table next to me while I am eating at the diner.. LOUDLY spoken so that you cant help but hear ) and I dont want to hear your 8 year old ask: Hey, Wheres the waitress? I need some FREAKIN' Ketchup!! What the crap??"
