OT: Ovulation Pain and The Pill ??

I have been having pain in my lower abdomen for the past year or so. It occurs every month or so and is sharp and severe. It actually makes me double over and sex makes it worse. I asked my wls about it (fearing it was from my port) but he says it is way too low to be that and advised me to see my pcp (who is also my gyn).

I talked to my pcp who scheduled me for two ultrasounds. One was done on my abdomen to rule out appendicitis. The other was internal with the wand to get a better look at my uterus and ovaries. Neither scan showed anything abnormal. They told me to call back if it happens again. Since then it has happened several more time but I haven't made another appointment because im afraid they think I am nuts.

I did some research and found out about a condition called mettelschmertz (german for middle pain), whiich is painful ovulation and occurs with 20% of women. However, all articles and even my pcp confirmed at my physical on Nov 2 that I couldn't have this because I am on the pill and therefore do not ovulate.

My concern is there is something wrong on the inside of me and I won't be able to get pregnant next year.

Now I am really confused though because I did not start my period as usual on Nov 2 so I didn't start my new pill pack. As of today, I still have not started. 3 stick tests and 1 blood test all show negative for pregnancy. And to top it all off, I had an episode of the lower abdominal pain last wednesday.

Does anyone have any clue as to what may be going on with me? I want to call my doc and sked another appointment but feel as though I am bothering them with my pain that no one can find the cause for.  My last pap was done on Nov 2 and was normal. I also had an internal that day and my doc says everything appears to be fine.

I have the same issues each month. It started on one side and now both sides hurt but alternate each month. (Nov. was right side and Dec. will be left side) I have polycystic syndrome (please for give my spelling) This is where the eggs basically turn into cyist inside the orvaries. They were able to tell this by doing an internal ultasound and saw my ovaries appeared "bumpy." They link this to being over weight and not ovilating as a normal person. Since loosing over 150 lbs. it has gotten worse because I now ovulate each month. Bad news, is there is nothing they can do for it. Good news is I have 2 beautiful children.

My advice is to keep going back to the Dr. and keep a jounral of when it happens and how close it is to TOM. I have several friends that got pregant while on the pill because they were will ovulating. Best of luck and keep looking for an answer.

I had severe pain in my lower left abdomin for over 3 years - usually once or twice a month.  I had ct scans, ultrasounds, x-rays.   I went to a urologist, gynecologist, gastroenterologist, primary, bariatric - every doctor I could think of.  I am on depo-provera so I do not get periods.  One ct scan showed "something" but no one was sure what.  This past September I went to the hospital because I was in soo much pain.  They did another ct scan and compared it to a previous one that showed "something" and it was bigger than it was 2 years ago.  I was diagnosed with divriticulitis.  After I got out of the hospital I had a colonoscopy - guess what?  no divriticulitis.  So I went back to my bariatric surgeon with a copy of the ct scan.  His only suggestion was exploratory surgery to see what the problem was.  Thank goodness I did.  Apparantly the tubing from the band was tangled on something (one big cause of my pain) and I had adhesions all over the place in there.  I had surgery just about a month ago and have not had a single attack since.  Just something to think about!  Hope you get your pain resolved.

Thanks Jen! I actually have had this pain prior to band surgery though so I am thinking it has nothing to do with the band :(

I had pain like this back when I had TOMs.  In doing research, I determined that I was ovulating.  I would get my monthly 2 weeks to the day after experiencing this pain which was much more severe than the actually TOM.  It can remember the nausea and that it didn't respond to pain medication.  I had it on the pill and not on the pill.  Neither my sister, nor any other women I've talked to have experienced this.

One month, I predicted when the pain would come based on my last TOM and my husband and I "tried" to make a baby.  The next morning, we did it again, just to make sure it took.  Later that morning, the pain came.  Nine months later, my 21-year-old daughter was born.

From what I read at the time, the pain is due to the egg bursting out of the follicle and the blood that results.  I do know that I ended up with an ovarian cyst and one of my ovaries had to be removed when my youngest was 2.  I stopped having TOMs when I was 40-ish.  I attribute it to my weight and to having only one ovary to do the job.

So... count the days after the pain until your TOM.  I'm curious.

Sounds like PCOS, i think there is a whole other board for that.  I have had irregular periods my whole life, until now.  Now I am having ovulation pain BIG TIME and regular periods.  I have a son, but it took a long time to conceive.  It makes it hard to get prego, but it isn't impossible.  My moms GYN told her after she had me not to worry about birth control because of PCOS and my little brother is 4 years younger than me.

If you are having the pain, you are most likely ovulatiing, which means you can get pregnant.  I wouldn't worry too much, except the pain SUCKS!  Good luck!

Wouldn't PCOS have shown up on  my ultrasounds though? I had both an abdominal and an internal with the wand...

I have always had the ovulation pain too, even on the pill.  I am on the pill now and I swear i still get it.  I don't know though what it could be though.   I've always wondered exactly what it was, but I chalk it up to ovulation, cyst (which is what ovulation ultimately is) and just the cycle.  It normally comes and goes.  I've had it really bad before though where I have double over and it does hurt.  I feel for you. That was back when I wasn't on the pill though.

How did you make out today at the Drs?
