Hi Lori,

it sounds awful and i'm sorry you are going through this. Is the mass fatty? Do you have lumps of fat elsewhere....as in lipomas?

The doctor that specializes in fat disorders is Dr Karen Herbst who is in San Diego but I believe she is very helpful to patients all over the country.  Her website is

www.lipomadoc.org

I do hope that you can get some help or advice about your condition.

Topic: A strange condition...does anyone know of this?
Hello

I had gallbladder surgery 5 years ago and immediately following the surgery the right side of my abdomen started to swell.  It started with 20lbs and now it is 80lbs!  I weigh 430 and my insurance doesnt cover weightloss surgery.  Even if it did i am scared to get cut again with this current condition.

I have been to top doctors at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown hospitals as well as about 25 doctors in different fields and no one knows why or ow to stop it.  When i had 30 pounds a plastic surgeon gave me a big tummy tuck and cut it off but it only grew back with avengence and I got very sick after the surgery.

Any thoughts are appreciated.  They say its not lymphadema, but i thought i would ask you all if you have ever heard of this.

Thank you
Lori

Topic: RE: Dry brushing?
I have lipedema, rather than lymphedema but I dry brush every day. It is actually wonderfully good for your whole system and feels great. You must use a natural bristle brush that is specifically for the purpose (they are not expensive) and use light strokes. It may help your lymphedema, and it will do no harm,as long as you don't scrub at your skin.

The weird thing about it is that I had an effect that I simply wasn't expecting. I have very mild psoriasis on my elbows. At one stage i had run out of my cream, and it was acting up and was looking pretty red and angry. I started dry-brushing, avoiding the area, and within a week the psoriasis had pretty much abated. Very strange. I have stopped and started it to see if it was just a one off thing, but no......if I don't dry brush, the psoriasis gets worse.

Anyway, there are many videos on youtube showing demonstrations of the technique. Here is a website that also describes the technique in detail.

i hope this helps

Topic: RE: Anybody know how to get rid of Venous Stasis discoloration?
Sorry to tell you - but the discoloration is permanent.  It's also called "Heam tattooing" - my legs have improved a lot with the weight loss, but the discoloration is still there.

It's caused by the rupture of small blood vessels due to the pressure from the excess fluid - the iron in the blood stains the tissues (even through the body has reabsorbed the blood).

The main thing is to make sure you maintain your treatment - the stained areas are pre-cursors to ulceration (which is much, much worse) so it's good that you're being treated before it gets that bad.

Topic: Dr. Mario Alberto Almanza-Reyes
I was just posting this because I've had more people than I thought, write me and let me know how much their sorry and how they are praying. My momma is one of the nicest people out there, I wish that we can individually meet each and every person on this website that are planning on going to Dr. Almanza. I wish I could take you guys through a normal day in my life now that everything has messed up in my life. Going through my last summer as a high school student. I can't have fun... I won't have fun. I want justice to be served!!! I want to save someone's life. Please this is NO JOKE!! I wake up everyday and I think and pray about anybody who's in or going into surgery with Dr. Almanza... I pray for you guys. I don't even know you guys. My mom has been in ICU on a ventilator for 7 days now... my best friend... I can't go see her whenever I want to anymore... visiting hours are precise. My mom won't be able to see the 17th Anniversary of me arriving in this world, because she's too busy going through something that shouldn't have ever happened!!! DOCTORS MAKE MISTAKES... BUT WHAT KIND OF DOCTOR MAKES MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.. Yes, you might have had a WONDERFUL experience... but listen to the stories people.. just because you were lucky DOES NOT mean that everybody else was. There are many people around the United States and Canada that are dealing with their friends and/or family members DYING with deadly infections, holes in stomachs, esophagus, etc. You guys keep telling your friends to go.... and eventually, you are going to go through what me and my family and plenty other families are going through right now. I'm not trying to harsh Dr. Almanza's "mellow".... I am truly, honestly, and dedicative to preventing as many people from going to this doctor as possible. Please spend the extra money and getting done by someone who is, not only cheap and kind, but dedicated to helping you. Not a doctor who is just going to WHAM BAM over and never see you post-op (to many people). Please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..... I am not doing this to get back at Dr. Almanza or anybody that is working over there just because they've done this to my momma. I am doing this to prevent YOU from ever going through something like this. It IS NOT FUN.
Love always and forever,
Miranda

Topic: RE: My PS stated that I have lymphedmia
I had a thigh lift in April 2009, today is 06/02/2010.  I never heard of lymphedema, but after the surgery I had swelling and tightness in the my right calf and ankle, it was very painful, my PS ordered compression stockings and told me to wear them. I kept waiting for it to go away, so here I am a year later still with problems going on.  You get the sugery to improve your legs and although they looked good, I was in a lot of pain and couldn't walk normal because of the swelling, so then came back pain.  I was an active woman, thin, weighing 110, and just wanted a little lift in my thighs.  I was shocked at what I ended up with.  My thighs were so tight, I couldnt bend them  for a very long time, and the swelling, I just didn't know what was wrong.  One day at physical therapy for my back the therapist said " I just don't understand the swelling in your one leg"  Another older therapist said, it is her lymphatic system, it has been injured by removing the tissue from her inner thigh, and until that heals it will keep swelling.  Well a year later, it is still swelling, only in the other leg now and up higher near the scar, it feels like my leg is being torn apart sometimes.  My PS looked at my legs and ordered me another pair of compression stockings only panty hose this time, and said "see you in six months".  I was mortified.  Through researching and reading, I found a lady who studied the technique taught originally by Dr. Vodder, the manual lymph drainage massage.  It really works along with the compressiion stockings and bandaging at night.  Sometimes I am almost pain free, I hope someday I can have no swelling and go w/o the stockings.  To anyone considering a thigh lift, you should think again, is it worth it?  If it wasn't for the stockings and the massage that moves the fluid that starts to harden due to damage of your lymphatic system, I would not be able to do anything. I hope there are better days ahead.  I plan on starting a rigerous treatment program at a physical therapy facility where they do manual lymph drainage massage, this has been a very expensive ordeal to say the least.  I can't show my legs anyway now due to the thick stockings, it is very disheartening.  Doctors should tell you about this but frankly they don't know that much about it.

Topic: RE: Lymphedem and Plastic Surgery
Good Luck Marie, I too was shocked at Dr. Moosa'scomment the first time I met him  I've had 4 surgeries on my stomach . Two vertical C Sections and the others  laproscopic. Usually you would avoid any further damage to the lymphatic system. Within a week of Aetna learning I had Lymphedema they approved revision from lapband to RNY.  The Dr. has been so pleased with my progress . He has shown me how to message in the shower my arms and legs to get better  shrinkage of the expanded tissue. Again he emphasized the need for me to stay hydrated and dry the folds completely to avoid rashes that cause cellulitis. I think if you have enough documentation they would know it would be cheaper to remove the skin versus the expense of infections and further treatment.

Thanks for getting back with me on my issue Nanna Jean. And I want to say grats for you dropping those sizes< it does help. And you know I find it interesting that your Dr. said that about the plastic surgery being able to relieve some of the pressure off of the lymphatic system. I too believe in that greatly. I will bring this up with my plastic surgeon as well as my primary care physician as well. I will keep you posted as things progress in this for me. I'm going to request you as a friend if that's okay and keep the info line open.

Thanks for the insight and keep up your success, Marie

Thanks Scott. Sorry it took so long for me to respond, it"s been a little hetic lately. I will follow up with my plastic surgeon but I think that it will go well as long as my primary Dr. stays involved from what I'm told.

Thanks for your help, Marie.
