Topic: RE: Low Blood Sugar After RNY
Christy,,
Here is the weird thing,, being diabetic since the early '90s,,, on insulin,, I got to experience Hypo many times,, Now waana really go crazy,, Many of the symptoms are the same (for me) as dumping. Just last week I started to feel goofy,, I was working with four guys loaned to construction so I was trying to coordinate everyone,, did a quick review of my day and realized,
I was not taking in fluids like I normally do,
I had nothing to eat for almost 6 hrs,
I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off.
Chance of dumping? ZERO
Chance of going Hypo,, 99.999999%
So I grabbed some crackers and cookies I keep with me,, within minutes felt 100% better.
I don't carry my meter anymore,, (I know, I know I should) but because I was familiar with the symptoms, and KNEW I wasn't dumping,, I knew I was low.
So my warning is this,,, If you feel that way and had something that MIGHT make you dump,, go slow trying to raise Glucose,, If you are completely sure you are NOT dumping get something in to raise sugar. QUICK. Juices work pretty good, candy bars, carbs, what ever. Dumping is bad and sucks,,, but ultra low sugar CAN KILL YOU. One night (before surgery) I was kicked back watching TV and the screen didn't "look right" I sat up and tried to stand and basically couldn't. I saw Cookies within reach grabbed a couple and ate them,, grabbed my meter and was 35,, ate another,, sugar continued to drop, Yelled to El to get the Glucagon ( "sugar shot" ) ready while I started to eat Glucose tablets, Glucose leveled out at 30 and started to come up. It scared the ka-ka out of me.
Figure this,,, Ideally glucose in the 80-100 range is desireable,, most people are "fine" (able to function) in the 300 range or more,, BUT hit 20, (see how small the low range is compared to being high) and most people go to sleep,, and never wake up without help. Get the help, and in 3-5mins you are fine.
BECAREFUL going hypo. I would rather error on the high side than low.

Hmm.... may have to add that to my Amazon wish list. As in, I wish I would read more and watch TV less! :)
My in-laws gave me some really good WLS cookbooks for Christmas thru Amazon - one had an amazing pseudo-cheesecake recipe. Was actually more like mouse, but any substitute for dessert with less than 4 carbs is awesome, right?

Good morning!
I hope everyone is having a great Friday. Kids been home for 3 days and they are talking about possibly another storm heading our way Tuesday into Wednesday. Kids are enjoying the time off and me I am going nuts! lol
Enjoy your weekend, stay warm and safe!
My affirmation:
I am beautiful in every way. A light shines through me and inspires all.
New beginnings are like forks in a road or new blades of grass. So many ways our lives can go, so many choices. Each choice and each piece of our lives make up a part of who we are. I affirm that this is a beautiful new year, a new day, full of amazing ways in which I will improve my life now.
Have a great day on purpose!

Oh wow a microchip? When will you get it? How would it be taken out. Sorry for all the questions.
Yes it is one of the downsides of RNY. But I have noticed that when I stay away from simple carbs I do really good. Once I have carbs again I am bound to crash.
Let me know how things go for you.
