DD, if you're over 40 (and I assume you are) and the person(s) they hired to take your place or those of other employees over 40 are under 40 then you (and the others) may have a claim for age discrimination. Be sure and not sign any severance packages they offer you in which you waive any right to make a Title VII or any kind of employment discrimination claim, if you think that is the case.
You might want to talk locally to a labor lawyer or just file a complaint at your local E.E.O.C. office to see what they can find out ..
Employers are free to hire cheaper or laying off more-seniored employees, but they have to be careful that, by doing so, they are not commiting age discrimination as to a class of employees in the process ...
If the lay-offs have a "disparate impact" on the over-40 employees, then they got a problem .. !
