Funny Fart

I went to church this morning for the first time since May. I've been working a second job all summer and was working most Sundays and those that I wasn't working I was being lazy. So anyway, my wife and I sit down in the pew and are getting ready for worship and this couple in their early sixties come in and sit down in the pew in front of us. I know them by name and say hidy and what have you, but we're not really close. So we nod and say hidy when they sit down and the service commences. During the "meet and greet" part of the service he turns around to shake my hand and says, "Fish, I don't  generally like to ask people personal questions but....". So I'm getting ready to answer one of the handful of questions that all of you guys who are more than a couple of months out have heard a dozen times. A) How much have you lost? B) What do you weigh? C) If you don't mind me asking, how did you do it? Or some variation of those three. But this ol' bugger crossed me up. His question was, "Fish, I don't generally like to ask people personal questions but........have you lost all that weight on purpose?" I just had to laugh and say yeah, yeah I did lose it on purpose. He then proceeded to ask the other three that I'm more used to getting. I guess his original question could be translated loosely as "Are you dying of some kinda cancer or something?" but he didn't want to be that blunt.

This is a prime example of why I think it's a good idea to let people in your social orbit know ahead of time that you have had WLS ...  No telling what kind of wild rumours out there can start floating around if you don't, when the lbs. start falling off suddenly, e.g. you have cancer, A.I.D.s, some other serious disease, have developed an eating disorder, are going through a divorce or working on an affair, going through mid-life crisis, etc etc.  .

btw, they call you "Fish" in person?

It's not uncommon for men to call each other by their last name out here in the sticks.

I answer to those also just out of habit. Except now that I'm getting on in years I usually require them to call me Mr. Azzhole or Mr. Sum***** Sir.

It's all about respect as we get up there in years, isn't it, Fish?

I also went to church today with my wife and kids.  First time since surgeyr. I got the three questions from a variety of people who had heard.  It often becomes the topic these days at social events.  At the end of church was an Ice Cream social.  That wasn't hard for me but it was a reminder of what I can't do anymore.  It did feel good to sit there and talk while sipping on a decaf coffee.  I have become more social lately.  I was really withdrawing before the surgery.

We also had communion.  OUr church serves Grape Juice and I have to say I got a little paranoid that it had "added sugar."  But, i downed it and was ok.

On another note,  I have been absolutely amazed at how many people I am meeting that have either had it or are thinking about it.

Speaking of which ..  I wish we could really come up with some sort of sublime "symbol" so that we WLSers could recognize each other in public, on a ring, lapel pin, cufflink, etc.    It would be amazing I bet to see, as you mention, how many people have already had WLS ..

I kinda asked people to submit ideas about this design earlier this year on TT ..   The probem was, that I suggested it be something (1) unisexual and (2) not obvious (e.g. "butterflies") ..  It seems like nearly all the suggestions violated either #1 or #2 or both ..

I do like something I saw on one gal's signature line which she said she got from an Internet site that has all kinds of drawings ..  It was a line drawing of a fat woman's body in shadow, with a slender woman "inside" it, with arms raised in triumph ..  I tried drawing a unisexual version (or even just a male version) of this drawing and it just didn't work .. and it would be so detailed that it would not be possible to make out what it showed if shrunk down to, e.g., ring size ..

Any of our artsy-fartsy types wanna see if they can come up with something?

You should be ok with taking communion because the volume is so low. A typical serving of juice is 8oz, I think our communion size is a 1/2 of oz.., so as long as the sugars in the smaller size is low enough you should be all right. I dont know what the results would be with a small serving of wine.
