"Exercise is much more important for maintaining weight than it is for losing it. In fact, scientists believe it's the single best predictor of maintaining weight. Research over the past two decades clearly shows that individuals who exercise after weight loss are far more likely to maintain their weight than individuals who don't exercise."

MedicineNet.com

"A recent study at the University of Colorado concluded that exercise is essential for most overweight and obese individuals to maintain weight loss. Those that incorporate moderate exercise during the weight loss phase increase the odds of keeping the weight off over the long haul. Those that fail to do so will increase their chances of weight regain."

Preach it brother Boner, preach it.

A friend of mine who had RNY in April of 07 and whose results convinced me to get off the fence and have my RNY in November of 07 is down from 505 to about 220 w/o much if any exercise. He looks damned good, but I notice that he walks like an old man now. He's about 40 and shuffles around like he's 70. I don't know if it would be any better if he had been on a serious walking program all of this time, but I suspect it would. Part of it may be that he still walks like he has a  BMI of 60 just due to ingrained habits. It really looks funn though to see a guy who looks as healthy as anyone his age has a right to, and yet shuffles around like he needs both hips replaced.

That's funny because sometimes I catch myself doing that too. At 320+ I wasn't as big as your friend but I did develop a mild fat-man hobble.

It's funny because I can run a mile on the treadmill and do 30 minutes of resistance training but then after I get out of the gym I'm walking around like the super-morbidly obese man I used to be.

It amazes me how much our mind really is in control...

Hey JFish I was wondering how long did it take your friend to loose that much weight....I had my RNY in April of the year and I strted off at 559 and at 5 months out I;ve already lost 131 lbs...I don't walk as much as I used to and know I need to get back to walking.....

I couldn't tell you for sure. I know that the first time I saw him after his surgery, he was about 4 to 4.5 months out and was down 145 lbs already. That very fact is what made me quit straddling the fence and commit to going the surgery route. He was somewhat more obese than I was to start. He started at 5'10" and 505 and I started at 6'2" and 455. And he lost his weight a lot faster than I did. I"m gonna guess that he was down to 220, which is a loss of 275 lbs in about 14 months. I'm 9.5 months out and hope to be down 200 by my 10 month anniversary. He's 7.5 months ahead of me and his restriction is still to this day more than mine. He still can't eat more than about a half of a breakfast burrito at one sitting, while I can eat the whole thing. Yeah it takes 10 minutes where it used to take 2, but I can and occasionally do eat the whole thing at once.

I catch myself still going "ummmmpphhh" when I get up out of a chair or out of bed and then thinking, "**** man, I didn't need to grunt like that in order to lift something that light."

Thanks Bama,

This picture was originally of me and my daughter. She was elected homecoming duchess at her hs and I had to escort her out on the field before the game. I cropped everything else out of the picture to put on here. Anyway, I emailed the whole picture to my mom and dad to show off my daughter and her accomplishment and my mom emailed back saying that she couldn't figure out who the guy was standing beside her granddaughter. It took her several seconds to recognize that it was her own son. And I saw them July 4th wknd. That felt pretty good knowing that my own mother didn't recognize me at first. Now if I could just find a way to reverse the oldness.......

Yes, Boneman ..  but, does that hold the same water for WLSers?     We know that is generally true for non-WLSers who have lost a lot of weight (look at exercise weight-loss fanatics Richard Simmons and Susan Powter) ..    Simmons said if he didn't do all of his aerobics every day he would gain his weight right back, despite his continuing "dieting" ..     Talk about being on a treadmill! (figuratively and literally)

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )
