IT'S BACK but....Does hunger ever return to pre-WLS levels?

Fish had a great post yesterday (his 1 out of 12 ) and I thought it worthy of being its own thread. Here it is:

"At 3 years out where would you say that your appetite, hunger, etc are located right now as compared to where you were in the last year or two before surgery? Obviously your exercise regimen is mu*****reased now as opposed to then, whi*****reases the number of calories you can safely consume, but what about the consumption end?  I'm 10 months out and I'd say that I'm currently at about 70 - 75% of where I was at pre-op in terms of the intensity of the hunger. Mentally though, I'm way ahead of where I was back then in terms of being willing to battle the hunger pangs and not give in to them with unhealthy snack foods. Also, I'm mentally way ahead of where I was in terms of being willing to get up from the table still hungry and wait for the food I've eaten to satisfy me later. Although I'll admit that this is still a major struggle. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this as you are now where I hope to be soon."

The good news: my hunger level is NOWHERE near my pre-WLS levels. Prior to WLS, I was hungry 24X7 and I "couldn't" stop eating. I compare it to being a shark where my only purpose in life was to EAT. Don't know how to measure the head hunger vs. real hunger but guess it doesn't matter. If I had to estimate, I would say in general it's less than half what it used to be. There are times, like the week following a mongo, all day bike ride, where my appetite is killer and I can't seem to control it.

The bad news: My appetite has increased exponentially after my one-year WLS honeymoon period.  Fish said it best and it's worth repeating......Mentally though, I'm way ahead of where I was back then in terms of being willing to battle the hunger pangs and not give in to them with unhealthy snack foods. Also, I'm mentally way ahead of where I was in terms of being willing to get up from the table still hungry and wait for the food I've eaten to satisfy me later.

That said, newbies this is why it's so important to develop excellent eating and exercise habits during the honeymoon. Do it, and the weight maintenance gig is less onerous. Don't do it, weight regain is likely imo.

Any other WLS vets care to chime in?

The one nice thing is I am aware that I am an emotional eater n I am learning to feel when I am full. Those help with appetite

Good question, Boneman (and Fishdude) ..

I have "spoke up" before on how it seems like a lot of my pre-op hunger has returned.      I know this b/c so many things that had no taste to me or were outright yucky after surgery now are starting to appeal to me or have the similar good taste they did as a pre-op, once again (unfortunately) @ 2+ years out       I'm not sure why this is, as they keep druming in our heads, at least on the DS forum, that the DS (and even the VSG) eliminates 85% of our grehlin (sp. ?) "hunger hormone" levels, along with the 85% of our stomach which is removed to form the gastric sleeve which is where it is produced.       However, I have also read some studies in the past that seem to suggest that possibly the remnants of the stomach are somehow able to increase production of the hormone to make up, at least partially, for some of the reduced amount, over time  ..     IMHO, that is what is going on, but don't try to suggest that to the pundits on here ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )

My stomach never feels hungry and man, it used to.

My blood sugar levels and habits remind me to eat, but if I get busy it's easy to forget to eat because there are not any real hunger pangs coming from the abdomen.
