Newbie
Hi guys,
My name is Phil, and I am new to OH. I have been lurking for a while, but wanted to introduce myself. I am trying to make the difficult dicision of whether to go ahead with RNY surgery.
I am really excited about the possible changes in my life, especially since I am diebetic, but the surgery sort of scares me and the permanance of it all is really difficult to handle. I have found a lot of great information here and have learned a lot reading all of your posts. I really do feel at home here!!
I have an appt. to see my PCP on 10/15 and plan to ask him about bariatric surgeons in the Philadelphia area. I'll keep you posted...

Welcome Phil, you have come to the right place. I had my RNY on 9/15, so just 2 weeks out. Yeah, it's definately life changing, but thank God! It got to where I had no where else to turn. I knew if I didn't do this, I was literally going to die. I couldn't even get dressed without being totally exhausted. I have been on insulin for years and years, and my blood sugar still ran over 200. They took my blood sugar several times/day in the hospital after my surgery and it was running 114 without insulin, which my surgeon took me off of. This morning it was 94! Good luck in your journey, Michael
Howdy Phil and welcome to the MF ..
How much weight do you need to lose? You might want to also check out the possibility of having DS for your WLS, esp. if one of your goals is to cure the diabetes.
DS permanently resolves 98% of Type II cases usually within 2 weeks of surgery, having the best % in that regard of all the WLS types. You do have a great DS surgeon near you in Peckville:
Dr. Peters is also one of the lowest cash price DS surgeons in the U.S. at present, in the event you can't get your insurance to pay. I think his charge is currently under $20K total.
Good luck on whatever you decide to do, and again welcome to the MF.

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

Welcome Phil! Glad you found the joint!
I too was looking into WLS - primarily due to my diabetes. My sister had lap band in Feb - and said it was cuz she didn't like the fact that RNY was permanant. Well - I felt exactly the opposite. I wanted RNY cuz it WAS permanant! My diabetes was gone in less than a week, as well as my HBP. I am ecstatic with my results. Had no complications, and very little pain from the surgery.
This is a life changing decision that cannot be taken lightly. Do your homework, attend support group meetings, read the boards and ask questions. Sooner than you realize, the decision will become easier for you (no matter if you get the surgery or find success another way!). Good luck!

Welcome. Ask away, lurk, read and learn. You will be your own best supporter. You will not find too any here that will tell you not to do it, if that is what you are waiting to hear.
Best of luck on your journey.

Glad to meet you, Phil.
I read/asked/researched/lurked for five years before I found my head in the right spot. I wish I'd reached that spot earlier!
I went from "Oh man, I hate having to walk from the bus stop." to Climbing a volcano on Saturday (watch for a post), and training for a triathlon.
I used to dread changing diapers, not because of the stink, etc, but because it meant me having to climb up a chair to get off the floor with hurting knees. Now, I'm part of an expedition group training for climbing Mt. Shasta next summer (14, 178 ft) with full ice pick and cramp-ons!
Yup. It's a permanent solution.
