Husband just out of ICU - Bowel Obstruction

Hi guys,

It's a woman posting here, so I hope you don't mind.  I'm doing it on my husband's behalf, Beau.  I know he joined the forum not too long ago, looking for support before his surgery.  He asked me to update you.  His surgery took place last Thursday, the 9th and seemed to go well.  Then he got home Saturday night and that's when things started going down hill.  He started to have cold sweats and a lot of vomiting.  At first, we thought he might have over-done the liquid in-take, but we soon figured out there was more to it.

The hospital where he had the surgery was over an hour away and when I started to drive them there, we realized he wouldn't be able to make it.  He was just in too much pain.  So we took him to the local hospital and they diagnosed a bowel obstruction.  They transferred him by ambulance back to the original hospital where his surgeon was located and they did an emergency surgery; having to fully open him up.

His bowel obstruction was due to adhesions caused from a previous umbilical hernia repair.  Apparently, part of his bowel got caught in the omentum and became twisted, because of the adhesions.  His surgeon told us this only happens to 2% of the patients who undergo this surgery.  Everything was backed up and his bowels and stomach were extremely distended.  He ended up in the ICU for a couple of days, due to the trauma caused by the back-up and having just had surgery 2 days prior.  He was moved to a regular room today and still has an NG Tube in his nose that goes to his bowel and they are keeping things drained that way for now.

So, this was not the results we were looking for and you can say that he's been to hell and back.  Any words of advice or encouragement would be great.  Anyone else gone through this?  He should get out of the hospital this Sunday, but it's a wait and see game now.

Thanks for enduring a post from a woman.  I know Beau would be encouraged by hearing from you.

Thanks  - The Wife of Beau  :)

Tell Beau we are wishing for a speedy recovery for him.  It sounds like he has been through a lot in a short period of time.  I hope things get better for him and that he gets to come home soon.

Thanks for updating us.

Scott

See, we don't attack and bite all the time.    We really appreciate letting us know about Beau.  Let him know that his buds are praying for him, and will be glad when he is out, back home, and feeling better.   Prayers also go out to you.  I know it's really difficult on you with him being an hour away and having 3 small children.  Take care, Michael
