This is actually my second post, I posted a half hour ago on the general forum. Someone
suggested I post on the men's forum that I didn't know of its exsistence. I have yet to have
WLS  and have chosen RNY. All my paper work has been submitted to Medicare for
approval now the waiting game. Here's my situation my name is Mike I am 60 years old,
weigh 312, am 5'6' tall giving me a BMI of 50.2. I have COPD with emphasema and i'm
on Oxygen 24/7. The surgens would only agree to do the surgery if I have a Tracheotomy
and an IVC filter, because of my prior history of PE's in my lungs on two seperate occasions.
Has anyone of you ever had to have a Trach prior to surgery? If so how long did it have to
remain in place? Well I hope to get to know all of you on this site as this is the first of many more
posts.

Thanks for listening,
Mike G

Howdy Mike!  Nice shirt by the way....I think you'll be glad that someone on the "main board" directed you by the Mens' Locker Room!  I know I'll speak for the rest of the gang when I say...."Welcome"!

I don't have the experience you're looking for answers about with the surgery and the trach, but know you're among kindred souls here.

Welcome to the best forum. Here you'll get plenty of good advice. I don't have any on the Trach though

Welcome to this group!  Good guys here.  Very supportive and helpful.  I don't know about the trach, I have known people who have had the filter, and it is no big deal.

Welcome Mike.  So far, your striking out on the trach question.  During the first visit with my surgeon, he mentioned that he might have to do a trach.  Out of all the things he told me, this upset me the most.  From what I understood though, the trach was for the surgery only and would be closed either at the end of surgery or before I was discharged, but not putting money on that.   I thought I could get away without the sleep study because I had one about 8 years ago, but he had me do another.  By the time I had the new sleep study, and lost the 41 lbs prior to surgery that he required, I did not have the trach.  The surgery had no complications.  Go with what ever the surgeon suggests, because he definately will have your best interest in mind (or at least he better).   Glad your here, and congrats on your decision.  Michael

Welcome to the MF, Mike ..  and ROFLO on the shirt ..    I have seen it once before, and wondered if it was a custom-made job or whether a person could buy one somewhere (not to make lite though of any eating disorder   )

Be careful with the "Green Screen" (i.e .filter) btw .. I know of at least one very-experienced VBG/RNY/band WLS surgeon *****fuses to use them b/c he claims they actually cause more clots than they prevent (at insertion and removal apparently) ..

Whether you decide to use one or not, be sure you and your doctor observe all the other precautions and protocols to avoid post-op clot formation ..   I did a post a few weeks ago on here about just that, listing several different tactics ..   Having a tendency for PE is not good, as I'm sure your surgeon has talked to you about ..  Good thing you know that going in  ..  I know one VBGer that developed clots a few months after his surgery (apparently a reaction to the Silex ring used back then) and one PE almost costs him his life, and would have, had  him and his wife not lived just a few blocks from the ER at the time ..  He was not aware he would have that problem until after his surgery      (his surgeon eventually removed the ring to prevent future clots, meaning my friend regained most of his weight lost  )

Good luck and please keep us posted ..

I have no experience with the trach,  heck,  I don't even know how to pronounce it,  but I asked my NASCAR fan friend from North Carolina what to do with a trach and he said  "Go fast, turn left".

Hope that helps buddy.
