Advice for the man in my life.

Yes, I know this is a Men's Forum.  I'm going to ask my question, risk getting hit by a flying shoe, and get outta Dodge. Forgive me.

Sig Ot was 5'10",  379 pounds, lost to 315 in the 10 mos. before his RNY.

At almost a year post op, he's lost 92 pounds since surgery. Seems slowish to him. At a year out he is 222 pounds.

He eats 1300 cal a day or less, balanced 40% protein, 30% carb, 30% fat. He exercises daily for an hour--usually exercise bike with resistance, but also walking and free weights. He doesn't cheat: on the rare occasions he has a treat, he compensates elsewhere in the day's plan.

Ideas?

Hard physical work...chore jar??  That would break my stall better than exercise...

I suggest that you offer a long, sensuous BJ for every additional pound lost.  Trust me, he'll find a way to break the stall.

OK  In the first year RNY is expected to help a person lose 40% to 60% of their excess weight at the time of surgery. Your boy friend was 379 and ideal weight for him would be about 165 to 180 depending on his muscle build. That means he was about 200 lbs over weight at the time of his surgery. Doing the math 46% of his excess weight already. Looks to me that he is right on track. At any rate I would consult a Doctor and nutritionist familiar with RNY before making any diet change. Blood test can tell if he is getting enough protein for example. You may want to remind him that this is not a race and that we are all in it for the long haul.
Best of luck

He was 315 on his surgery date, not 379, so in fact his losses are slow.

I think he's aware it's not a race, thanks.

That amount of exercise is more maintenance than fat burn.  He may have to burn over 1100 xtra cals  and drink 3-4 sports bottles a day.  The WLS did its job, now he has to fini****
Welcome to the journey.  The WORK just begins.  Seems like our body just wants to be fat again and may work hard at it.

Can that really be the maintenance amount of exercise for someone only eating 1,300cal per day.  US nurtitional minimum daily requirements for a 165 lb man are 2,500 cal.  This would mean that he would have to eat over 2500 cal per day to even possibly gain.  It just seems that he's having a stall.

To add to what "Lbs." said, I read something the other day where they are now saying that the body does not actually start burning any fat until like 40 minutes or some such into an aerobics session ..  So start counting your "20 minutes a day" (or "30") only after the 40-minute initial period is over, sounds like .

As to the formula that Bob mentioned, I have never taken much stock in those "cals. to weight" forumulas.   If it were strictly that simple of a calculation, then the bigger we are, the more we must eat every day ..  At my pre-op weight of 461 lbs., I would have had to be taking in over 7,000 cals. a day to maintain that weight, which I know there is no way in heck I ate THAT much.       My mom was MO and one time was hospitalized with a medical condition ..  They put her in the hospital for a few days, and, b/c of her weight and diabetes, kept her on a 700 cal a day diet wihile in there.   Still, she came out weighing MORE than she did going in ..   Also, think of how many SO people you know who eat like birds (or not really that much food) and yet they are still huge ..       There must be other factors also at work than just our caloric intake, IMHO  ..

I don't understand what the question is ..  Are you saying he has not lost enough weight or not trying hard enough, or something else?        IMHO, he should be about 50 lbs. less than now, but how much loose skin does he have?   That can account for 20-30 excess lbs. or more ..      (but heck - I'd LOVE to be just 222 lbs. now ..  that would finally put me in just the "overweight" BMI category!   )

btw, didn't know you were spoken for, Jupiter ..
