Hospital label won’t mean better weight surgery

‘Centers of excellence’ have as many deaths, complications, researchers say
updated 1 hour, 26 minutes ago

CHICAGO - Despite the fancy label, hospitals designated bariatric surgery "centers of excellence" have as many deaths and complications from the weight-loss procedure as others, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

The extra cost and effort required by hospitals to earn such a designation might not be worth it, they said.

I often wondered if the "BCE" thing was really just political, to put an "approved" label on some facilities so they could get the Medicare biz.         This report just strengthens my suspicions ..

What was even more shocking I thought were those last bit of stats, about SO vs. MO patients and long-term weight loss:   90% of MO patients get to "overweight" vs. less than 50% of SO patients?        Dang, that's a discouraging word for us SO and ex-SOers ..        I wonder if the rates just for DS patients are comparable to the general WLS stats?

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

Or maybe closing the door on "new guys"? Hafta have 50 under your belt, and how do you get them til you do them? Maybe Elizabeth N will remember where I said I read a really cool article on it, and gave her doc a standing ovation for his comments. And that's not easy in the passenger seat of a truck.

You mean the title is just a lame attempt at PR?

Recently, I had to laugh in the face of one of my friends who tried to tell me that they were having their surgery at a COE because they are better than other hospitals. Of course, she is also getting a  LB because it is "safer" and "less invasive."

Some of the GOOD things to come of it:
furniture that fits (doc office & hospital)
toilets have to hold up to 600 # (no wall mounts)

Staff SUPPOSEDLY undergo "sensitivity training"

There were a few good things. But yeah. The concept was kinda good, HAVE SOME KINDA STANDARD. But it was kinda perverted immediately.

Personally I think the Center of Excellence thing is a big joke.  When researching my insurance, I found out that the COE thing was associated with the Insurance Companies and the American Bariatric Society.  They base their decision to make someone or a hospital a COE based on statistics.

So Hospitals or Doctors that take on easy no-risk cases have excellent statistics.  Apparently the statistics don't weigh degree of difficulty in procedures.
