To straw or not to straw????

Okay, I don't drink anything without a straw, even my coffee.  It's just one of my peculiarities.  Especially since my dentist said it keeps your teeth from staining as much when drinking tea or coffee, hence, whiter teeth.  So it's just become a habit.  But now I remember in our seminar for post-op diet the nut said no straws because of the air or gas.  So tell me, from those of you who have been there and done it, is that really true.  Seems to me that you should be able to sip through a straw and control how much air or gas you swallow.  This just seems silly or is your tummy really that sensitive and it's actually that easy to swallow air?  Don't get me wrong, I can live or drink without a straw, but it just sounds pretty incredible or is it nit picking since I'll be doing so much sipping for weeks.

I straw. Like you, I'm used to doing it and I can control how much liquid goes into my mouth a lot better than if I drink from a glass. We were told no straws because people have a tendency to drink too fast when they use one, so I pretty much knew that would not be an issue for me. I sip better using one and have had no problems at all with gas or air or burping. Guess a lot depends on the person.

If you want to straw, try it and see how you do.

HUGS!

Leanne, I agree with you...  it's the individual person most likely. The most crucial part is probably the small sipping.  Anyhow, after Wed, I'll be able to tell what I can and can't do.  I'll probably have to wait until I get home from the hospital though to have access to straws.  Hugs!!! to you too and thanks. (It's funny some of the things I am curious about.)

Dear CKnorte, I give the straw 3 thumbs up so far.  After all, it's not like we are babies that get colic and need burping.  Or on the other hand, maybe the new tummy can be that sensitive.  I'll soon be finding out on my own.  Thanks & hugs to you!!!  Take care.

I drink everything with a straw. When I was in the hospital, everything they brought me came with a straw. I think it's a choice a patient can make themselves. If you know how to drink with a straw without  gulping air, I say GO FOR IT!

They told me straws too because it encourages "rapid fluid intake".  So I didnt for the first few days, but I cant stand it, so Im back to using a straw.  It doesnt bother me at all.  I just make sure not to drink too fast.

I use a straw for a lot of things. Depends on what I'm drinking. Never has bothered me.

I found a straw made it much easier to get my liquids in early out. I never had a problem with using one.

STRAW!  Initially I didn't because of the whole "air" thing... I dropped it about two weeks before surgery just to get used to it, and my son even threw all my straws away.

But you know, I don't swallow any more air with a straw, and possibly less.  The only thing I worry about now from using one is getting all the little lines around my lips!
