Hi, Elizabeth:

It's an interesting question you've posed here.

I am a writer and editor who has been published in newspapers and magazines and I have a tentative book deal for a novel I've almost finished.

With writing, it's not so much about a specific education as it is about talent and creativity. A writer needs  not only great ideas, but also a good grasp of the technical aspects of language, such as grammar, spelling and punctuation,  and the ability to structure any piece of writing, whether an article or a novel, in a logical fashion. Even with years of experience, I still consider writing difficult yet immensely satisfying work.

That being said, I have some ideas about how you might begin to see whether this line of work is indeed for you. Please PM me when you get a chance and we'll talk, okay?

Cheers,

Denise

Elizabeth, the world is at your feet and if being a writer is something that you want and you do it well then go for it!  There are books that you could get at the library, as well as online,  that would give you an idea about how to go about writing and publishing.  Take it one step at a time though as not to overwhelm yourself....it's just the beginning for you and I think if you have people who would sponsor you that is awesome.  Just start out with an idea and build on it.  Books at the library would be helpful.  I wish you the best, and I hope you get to use everyone of those brief cases. Take care hon.

I agree with everyone else "Sarg".....I think you can do what ever you set your mind to. They say that if you do something you really love  ... you will prosper.
What would you write? Fiction? Comedy? Romance?
Good Luck my friend...

Hi Elizabeth,

I want to be honest with you because I think that's what you're asking for.  I find your stories to be highly entertaining and I love your humour.  You remind me a great deal of Erma Bombeck, if you don't know who she is just google her.  She started out as a newspaper columnist and wrote about everyday life, but her humour was very similar to yours.  She also wrote a few books which were again a very humourous look at everyday life.  I think where you really need to hone your skills is with proper grammar, sentence structure, etc. but you already have the most important piece - style and creativity!  I hope you connect with Ontario Dee and get some advice as I'm sure it will help a great deal.  I wouldn't recommend taking on-line courses for something like this - you probably wouldn't get nearly as much out of it as you'll end up paying into it!  Good luck, and if you start out with writing short stories or column-like pieces, be sure to try them out here first - we would all love to read them!

My son took a creative writing night course at a local high school...didn't cost a cent. Might be a start. You may have to wait till Sept but I bet there will be something for you.
I think you can succeed at what ever you set your mind to.
Best Wishes

I think that you should start writing right now!
Why don't you see if you can find Stephen King's book .  I found it quite interesting, and you might get a feel for more of how you want to approach your own writing.  For grammar, I recommend .  I bought mine at Chapters.
The best thing you can do is just start writing.  Even if you set aside 30 min - 1hr every day, you'll be able to get a feel for where you want to go with this.
Good luck!!!
Jen

Hello Elizabeth you know I`ve already told you often that u should write a book but before even reading all the posts the first thing that came to mind was to meet an author and have a long talk to see how they started how much work there is involved etc.. but I seen you got offered help from Ontario_Dee . Also a good place to start is a newpaper article we have one here its a comical women that talks about everyday life with her kids I always look for her articles every sat. in fact she has now moved to the Toronto area but still writes for our little newspaper. I think that would be you as when you write on here about your day to day life it always makes someone laugh and we sure need more of that in this bleak world. Then if you find yourself liking writing for a newspaper then you get contacts and could further your writing into a book. It`s just a suggestion but I would go into this a little at a time, I think to start right onto a book and try and get it publish might be as hard as getting approved for WLS.lol.Yes I can see you writing an article if that interests you I can mail you some clipping about the one that writes the funny day to day articles. PM me your adress and I will send you some no problem!!!
I wish you the best and I know that you will succed if thats what you want to do...

I have faith in you, Lise
