I asked the same question and was told there are no options.  The surgeons are the ones who say we have to take the optifast and you can only get it from the surgeon's office.

Although I'm not a fan of Optifast I believe that it is more complete nutritionally plus it is more satisfying.  Slim Fast is very thin whereas the Optifast has some body to it.

Slimfast has much higher sugars in it as well as it doesn't have the protein that optifast does...
That much I know... but that's all I know

Slimfast is full of sugar, second ingredient listed so it's definitely not as healthy and won't put you in ketosis.  Of course all that sugar is what makes it taste better.

I was thinking of trying it if I could not get my protien powder down as a post op, but the carbs and sugars were so high I would not even try it.  I also looked at carnation instant breakfast, same thing way too high. I know the opti fast is exspensive, you can ask on the boards if anyone is willing to sell theirs cheaper.

Why don't you compare the labels of optifast and some good quality protien shakes?

As an ex.
opticrap - http://www.optifast.ca/image.html
Isoflex -  http://www.isoflex.ca/powder.html

Print an opticrap label off from the internet and take it to a place like popeye's and I bet they could find a protien poweder that is better then opticrap and cheaper.

Personal opinon- I would tell the surgeons office that you got some optifast from a  friend who didn't use all hers and if you need some more you will come back and buy it. Then use a protien drink, and take two good quality multi's at seperate time of the day.

Surgeons office sell optifast for two reasons
1. they make money off of it.
2. it is an easy diet for you

If your going to do a liquid diet just make sure it is low carbs, low fat and that you stick to it.

Catnip

P.S. This is my opinion, I am not a medical professional and I don't even play one on TV.
