My husband had just started Dr. Bernstein.  I'm proud he is doing something finally and have to respect his wishes not to follow my surgical path BUT how many have you done the Bernstein thing and gained it back?

How did you do it? to me it looks like so little food?

Any suggestions for his sucess?

My mom did Dr. B... she did GREAT... as long as she was getting the shots and when she went on the maintenance plan she started gaining again very slowly and gained 15+ pounds more then her original weight.. went back to the clinic started getting shots again and started loosing.

she found the diet VERY restrictive and hard to follow and when she had a slip up the staff were less then supportive some treated her like a child. Bear in mind this was one office to the east of Toronto...

She finally gave up and quit after the 3rd try, it was not realistic for her to follow the plan. She is now 100+lbs overweight and refuses to try anything else to get the weight off. She is scared (I think) to be treated like she was at the Dr. B clinic

Thanks Dee, these are the things I've heard as well from others at Dr. B
He has not done WW or anyother programs - such a bad choice of starting diets, i feel my hands are tied as this is what he really wants and he knows a few people that have been sucessful.

they've already told him to reduce one of his medicines and I want him to go to his family doctor and keep him in the loop of what ever changes to his medicine they request.

I did 7 years ago.  Did really well....lost 130lbs.....but slowly but surly gained it all back!  So it does work to get rid of the weight but as soon as you stop the diet........it does come back!
Some people I am sure could manage the food changes on their own.....I did not do very well......ended up back and forth for 2 years after the initial.  It became a expensive habit!
All the best you him.....it does work.

I'm feeling a lot of pressure as I make and prepare the food in the house.  He will be good food wise as long as there is stuff to grab when he's hungry (which I expect to be often).

We did decide he would try one month and see if he thinks he can do it instead of doing a bigger package.

thanks for your support and response

I'm sorry to say the same thing happened to me.  I lost 122lbs and got down to my goal weight, but there was no way to 'maintain', it just wasn't feasible to live off so few calories.  While you're losing you feel on top of the world and you feel like you'll be able to do the maintenance easy, but once you get there, you start gaining back.  I also found the nurses (in Oakville) less than sympathetic and helpful, we were treated a bit like cattle in queue.  I gained back everything plus about 15lbs.  Felt like a total failure, but I knew I wasn't because I'd done everything they asked and been super strict with myself.  I guess it was just trying to live off of so few calories.  I eventually also gave up.  Much like Optifast, it's a fast short-term weight loss, but for the long term, I know 7 others who have also tried it and lost almost all their weight but I have yet to (personally) meet a person who hasn't gained it all back.  Which is sad, because it DOES take a lot of willpower and does work amazing to shed the lbs.  Keeping them off....

Thank you D.

What did you do to keep your mind off food.  I can't imagine you watched any TV; did you read a lot?
Were you moody the first week or so while adjusting to so little food?

Best wishes on your sugery next week.  If you made it through Dr. B diet - surgery will be a breeze for you (after the first few weeks)

Honestly? I worked a lot. When I wasn't working, I'd get hungry and sometimes I'd just go to bed early to get over it, knowing I'd wake up less hungry. I was also tired most of the time; I tried exercise but on 700 calories a day I couldn't do it, and my potassium got very low.  So work and sleep.  I was a little moodier, won't lie  ;)  ... but like any keytone diet, one you switch over to protein burning, it helps a bit after that first week.

I am sorry if this is not the answer that you want to hear, but I think that this is one of the worst diet plans out there, for many reasons.  It is extremely restrictive.  I was told even carrots were out of the question as they contained too many carbs. After 3 months on the program, I started to loose hair, and missed my periods.  I felt terrible.  I had this really weird thing where my hands and forearms would swell up so badly I couldn't bend my joints.  I also had rashes on my arms.  My family Dr. wondered if it was due to the high volume of tuna I was encouraged to eat as part of the diet, and possibly that I was reacting to the mercury in it.  I didn't investigate it further, but stopped with the tuna and the symptoms eventually subsided.  The previous poster is not alone in finding the atmosphere to be unsupportive either.  I was at the location in Woodbridge.  One day I went in for my monthly meeting with the doctor, and low and behold it was THE Dr. Bernstein himself.  After reviewing my food journal, he reemed me out (I am talking about yelling and screaming in my face, and berrating me like a child),  for eating steak at a friend's wedding.  I was a bridesmaid and at the head table.  He asked me why I didn't bring my can of tuna along. Ha!  And all of this drama was after I had already lost 50 pounds in 3 months.  I cried in his office and felt absolutely humiliated.  The nurses (who were actually nice), informed me on the way out of the office,  that this type of behaviour from him was not unusual, and he often kicked people off the program.  I literally quit that day.  There was no way I was going to invest that kind of money in a business run by someone that volatile.  After stopping the program, I promptly gained back every pound plus about 25 pounds more.  I have had more success with Weigh****chers, and Jenny Craig, who are in my opinion, much more relistic in their expectations.  I also found the South Beach diet to work really well, especially if you can do it with others.  Honestly I wouldn't waste my money on that program.

WOW that is definitely a bad experience.  glad to hear you had that steak.  I agree it's extemely restrictive.  I will keep an eye out for the same issues.

Makes you wonder why the nurses work there?

thanks
