How many did Dr. Bernstein?
Worst. Program. Ever. I knew I was done there the day that they chastised me and told me that I wasn't allowed to have sugar free jello anymore, along with many of the other foods on the list - said I wasn't far enough into ketosis. Ummm... thanks, but no. I manged to put on all of weight I had lost, plus a whole lot more, the moment I stopped the diet. In my humble opinion, Weigh****chers offers the best balanced, intelligent diet plan.

oh the diet works but so does being stranded on a boat in the middle of the ocean with just ply wood to munch on. I did the program for just over a month and I wanted to gnaw my arm off that''s how hungry I was and this was in full out ketosis.
Once thing that made me think twice was when I was about to give someone a shot at work and I felt really bad and asked another nurse to give it for me because I felt like I was going to pass out. She came in and took my blood surgar and it was 1.9 which is CRAZY. The docs there immediately gave me apple juice even as I was screaming that I'd get in trouble.
So later that day when I was feeling better, I called them to find out WTF, do I need more food? They told me to split my orange up in for portions and eat that throughout the day. Needless to say i quit the next day and celebrated with a big mac combo. I gained all the weight back within a month.
oh and about those shots, nothing magical there.

You've heard about the weight loss and regain so I won't repeat. They are brutal task masters and there is no effective maintenance plan.
It can be effective if your husband has a weight related impediment that prevents him from exercising. In that case I'd use Bernstein to get down to a usable weight and then switch to Weigh****chers and the gym.
It would be great to have a gym buddy in the form of your husband. You could be accountability buddies. With you on your RNY diet of protein first and controlled carbs then he would the weight naturally through a healthy lifestyle.

Before the surgery I kept putting things off. I was never good enough. One of the benefits of WLS is that you start to believe in yourself. Check out my blog:

Worst weight loss program I was ever on.(and I've tried everything) . I was starved and deprieved the entire time. It's expensive and teaches you nothing about proper eating habits. No one could maintain that life style. You are doomed to fail and regain the weight. Plus my office in Kitchener was also abusive.
Weigh****chers is sensible, but intimidating for men as you will likely be the only male in the class.
I lost significant weight on a low carb medically supervised diet.. It's actually fairly similar to what I eat now post surgery. (except now I have more fat)..
The problem with most diets is that they are restrictive. Although we've all mustered up significant will power and stayed "on the wagon" to loose weight, it's difficult to maintain a life style that makes you feel deprieved and restricted.
This surgery has been the answer for me. i don't feel deprieved. I feel full. it still takes some discipline. I could probably still graze on carbs all day, but if I eat my protein first.. i'm generally full and satisfied.
Sometimes we need a quick significant weight loss to get us motivated.. Hopefully your husband will loose a big whack of weight initially but encourage him to have an alternate more sensible plan ready when he inevitably gets frustrated with Burnstein's starvation diet.

I personally have never tried Dr. Bernstein. In fact, my family dr was extremely against it! She said it was THE worst diet to EVER go on. I have heard sooooooooo many complaints about him and I was very happy that I listened to my dr and other people that had tried it.
I would also tell your husband to quickly get off out of that program. It's such a COMPLETE waste of money to a guy that probalbly goes home every night to filet mignon with all the works on your dime.
My question to you is, you had the surgery and have obviously done well, why doesn't he learn from you??? How big is he, if you don't mind me asking? Hasn't your ways of cooking already changed to suit your new tool? I know mine has, and actually my bf likes some of the new things I have been trying.
I don't think your hubby has thought this completely thru, imo. Someone needs to set him straight perhaps. Why does he not listen to you???

Happily maintaining 4.5 years out!!
Life is GREAT!!!
Had my plastic surgery!
Unfortunately he does not feel that surgery is the best option for him at this time. after my 3 years waiting for surgery and almost out 3 years of me post op he still feels this way - he has to be ready himself. He still remembers me right after surgery and does not feel he is strong enough to make it through
due to our schedules we eat at different time and he has never attempted or wanted to eat smart till now. he weighed his options and took this path.
i will have him see his family doctor this week, I'm glad there are doctors out there discouraging this program.
