I thought it would be just as easy to ask here without telling my whole office what I am thinking about and by the time I get home from work and get my children settled where I can have a phone conversation they are probably closed in the evenings.

Just Googled - CRA medical deductions:

Medical services provided outside of Canada - If you travel outside Canada to obtain medical services, you can claim the amounts you paid to a medical practitioner and a public or licensed private hospital. A "medical practitioner" is an individual (such as a doctor or a nurse) who is authorized to practice according to the laws of the jurisdiction in which the services are rendered. A "licensed private hospital" is a hospital licensed by the jurisdiction in which it operates.

Not only can you claim the surgery, but the travel expenses and hotel expenses.

Hope this helps

Just to clarify - you can claim WLS costs, but not cosmetic surgery costs...

Click on the link above to CRA and they list what cosmetic surgery is covered and what is not.

(Cosmetic surgery) may qualify as a medical expense if it is necessary for medical or reconstructive purposes, such as surgery to address a deformity related to a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease.

In general, cosmetic will not be covered - I have braces for non-cosmetic reasons and even they are not covered.
