bad day yesterday, ended up in emerge....

I have to say that yesterday was a bad day for me; probably my first one since my RNY (other then my gall bladder stuff), really.

I went for my run with my neighbour and just could not fini**** We went early in the morning so it wasn't too hot. My left side was just very sore and made it hard to breathe. She became very worried about me and told me that I need to go get checked out. Not long after we got home, I had a shower and got ready for my day. I went to emerge. I thought for suure that I had a blind loop or  twisted bowel, the pain was awful.

They took my blood and checked all my levels- everything is still right on the money! :) I had an x-ray and then the dr wanted me to have a ct scan. The x-ray results came back, they said I was full of gas bubbles and stool :( He wanted the ct scan to rule out the blind loop, twisted bowel and see if I had and obstruction. Nope, no obstruction either. He gave me a script (which I didn't need) for an enema, EWWW!

I have tried soflax, docosate, milk of magnesia, a suppository and now the enema. Not all at one time but since my surgery, at different times, when I figured I was having an issue. I have talked to my NUT about this and she told me to eat more fruits and add more fibre to my diet, that was in March, I have since done that. My foods are really great, I have absolutely no issues with eating most things (just pork chops and ribs but only if they seem to be too fatty, as of recently).

I just don't know what else to do! It's frustrating me to no end! I am going to cut back on my cheese intake, I LOOOVE cheese but I also know that could be a contributing factor in my issue. I am drinking ALLL the time, water (also mixed with crystal lite or mio), teas and my protein shakes.

If anyone has any ideas or anyway to help me that would be greatly appreciated :)

Thank you in advance :)

Leanne

Oh Leanne,
I'm so sorry you had such a rough day.

I have a couple of anecdotal things that may (or may not) help.
Neither were medically proven/discussed - they were suggestions from friends that ended up working for me.

The first time I experienced the bloating/gassiness (before my RNY) I went to Emerg and they saw lots of bubbles an dlumps of stool on the ultrasound.

After many different medications, I finally ended up taking a girlfriend's advice - she told me that joghurt ingested either shortly before or after vegetables and/or fruit will end up fermenting in your warm moist tummy. So it forms gas bubbles, and blocks the stool from moving through smoothly.

I removed yoghurt from the time of day that I was eating vegetables or fruits putting it much earlier in the day, and that helped. No more fermenting.

The second thing that helped me, post-RNY, was Senna tea.
I had terrible terrible bowel problems after the RNY and it wasn't "proper " constipation - more like obstruction due to heavy bran and fibre intake. I tried all those things you tried, and it only got worse. I would spend anywhere from 4-11 hours on the toilet, giving birth to these huge lumps.

Then a girlfriend suggested going to the bulk food store and getting a Chinese laxative tea. The active ingredient is Senna - tastes a little bit like grass. I add one sweetened, and chill the tea during the day in the fridge.
In the evening, I drink one cup of it, and the next morning, I am as regular as anything. Just like a normal person.

Hope these help you.
WARNING - I am not a doctor. These just worked for me.

Leanne I get that way when I eat just protein....and yes cheese

I have a yogurt plus berries pretty much every day....and I see someone recommended that - and I am pretty good re BM

Good luck with it - you might want to vary your diet a little - why not add a few carbs and see if that helps?

What about probiotics? I've read on here that many people take them and it helps to keep them regular....just a thought....

Hi Leanne;

Sorry you are in so much pain.  I have tried everything under the sun as laxatives.  I am on morphine for back pain and this just adds to the already troublesome poop problems.

I have been using Lactulose.  It is a liquid that you ask for from the pharmacist.  It comes in a huge jug, but worth the the $30.  It takes a day or so to work, but I have found it works best for me.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Jeez Leanne that's rough, but I think a lot of us have varying degrees of this problem.  You don't say what kind of suppository so I'll suggest a glycerin suppository - it was suggested to me after trying everything and it worked.  I've only used it when absolutely necessary, which was twice now.

You're right, that's what it was ;)

Nothing seems to be working for me at this point :( I just don't know what to do... Ithought with using an enema (this morning), that it would help me greatly... although it helped a wee bit, it wasn't much. Now, I'm afraid to eat anything today cuz it won't come out.
