I agree because the Optifast was selected to make the pre-surgery prep easier for folks.

Otherwise it's figuring out (and getting people with eating issues to stick to) a low carb, LOW fat (fat burning), low protein diet that is below 900 calories in total that won't put a lot of stress on your liver.

Followed by 2-5 days of a cleanout bowel prep clear fluid diet.

No Optifast ain't pleasant, but once again, it's only 2-3 weeks of your life.  AND ALMOST EVERY ONE OF US HAS BEEN THROUGH IT HERE!

As I recall, one OH member from Ontario was on it for 6 weeks.  It wasn't a picnic for any one of us, but you've gotta keep your eye on the prize.  And it is only three weeks, you knew it was coming, you know that most people don't like it...

And as Karen M. said, it only gets harder post surgery.

I'll be honest here and admit that I didn't do Optifast.  It wasn't a requirement when I had my surgery.

BUT!!  DID do 2 weeks of high protein/low (no) carb, low (no) fat diet.  This was because my surgeon knew I was a rule follower and would do NOTHING to jeopardize my surgery.  I had demonstrated my commitment, knowledge due to research, and desperation to get my life back. In fact, I put myself on the diet a week early and did a full week of clear liquids, just to be safe. LOL!

lol, EXACTLY!  Thank you, Brenda!

I am managing fine, I have absolutely no problem dealing with mental hunger (in fact, I havent had any).  Its the physical hunger that sucks.
I will be quite fine before, during and after surgery.  LIghten up People!

I appreciate everyones concerns but really guys, relax!
Let a girl vent!

I don't think a liquid diet is supposed to be easy... nor do I think post op learning is supposed to be easy!

Thanks for the support

for the record, i liked the taste of optifast, when mixed with decaf. It took all the guesswork out of eating. Other than being hungry, at times, i was fine, for the three weeks i had to do it.

also, for the record, you got some really thoughtful responses about your complaint.

and, some 'suck it up' responses, which, really, is what you have to do. Suck it up, get through it, power down.

Vent away Sabrina!  Optifast sucks, plain and simple, I hated it.  Personally I agree that chicken, fish, etc will do the same thing and that part of it is to prepare you for post op.

Cruel and unusual punishment to be sure!  Hang in there.

You're right.  High protein, low fat and carb will shrink the liver.  Maybe not equally as well, but it does work and worked for me pre-op.  However, it seems to me that many (a LOT of) people would have trouble making wise choices (on plan completely) pre-op, which is why (in my not so humble opinion) they swtiched to Optifast.  No brainer - 4 shakes per day, no food choices, no decision making, no cheating.  I would have happily done Optifast for as long as they desired in order to have my surgery.  I wanted, and needed it, that badly.
