Can someone explain to me canned fruit?

First I'd like to say I understand what canned fruit is.

My after surgery book says I can have canned fruit, in fruit juice or water... however I can't seem to find any canned fruit in water, and the fruit I do find preserved in it's juice has quite a bit of sugar in it...and because I am uncertain if I am a dumper or not I'm afraid to try it...does any one have any suggestions on what brand to try and where to get it?

I can tell you what I buy because I find that some fruits I like better fresh. I bought the Dole Mandarin oranges in water. These are not canned but come in little plastic containers (four in a package) and the packaging looks just like the regular fruit juice ones but there is a small like wave type design on it that says packed in water. The second I bought was Del Monte Pears. You can't get diced pears so I ended up buying pear halves. Again, the can looks the same except for the little wave that says packed in water. I would recommend draining off the excess water before eating it. I found that if I let them drain and sit for a bit for the rest of the water to drip away they had a stronger fruit taste than if they still had some water droplets on it.

Hope that helps!

the only two fruits that i've ever seen sold packed in water are pears and peaches. they were sold right next to the other canned fruits.

I found water packed fruit at Walmart. I also found the no sugar added ones in syrup - I think it's Dole brand - they use Splenda.

peaches and pear are good but I think i would avoid the oranges..too stringy to take the chance of not chewing well enough and having something get stuck in the staples or stiches. Good luck

Hubby and I regularly buy the Del Monte Mandarin Oranges and also the Pears packed in water, from Walmart.  We both love them and have had zero problems tolerating them.  The ones we buy are individual sizes.

Del Monte now has peach slices, pears and fruit ****tail packed in water.  It can be a little hard to find, but in my area they have them (off and on) at all the grocery stores and walmart.  It'**** and miss though.

They had them on sale for $.99 a few months ago and I bought about 30 cans for post op!  Now I am starting soft solids I am looking so forward to eating them!

You can find the fruit in any grocery. It is with the other canned fruits. I buy sliced peaches in water all the time. The cans really look the same. There is just a small label that says packed in water

Just keep in mind that fruit packed in water is still pretty much just sugar. You don't get the benefit of any skin for fibre even on the pears and peaches.

Im not sure about your center but at mine it has to be soft fruit with no skin on it for a number of months anyway.
