Medical Alert...Do you.....?
Medic Alert bracelets for RNY should NEVER say "no sugar" as this could kill you if you were attended to by paramedics while having a hypoglycaemic episode.
Medic Alert bracelets for RNY should NEVER say "no NSAIDS" as this could kill you if you were having a stroke or heart attack and the medical personell hesitated to give you appropriate treatment because of what was on your bracelet (ask your surgeon, he'll tell you NSAIDs are appropriate in emergencies).
Medic Alert bracelets for RNY do not need to say "no blind NG tube". This is a small, flexible, soft platic tube inserted through the nose (or sometimes mouth) and put into the stomach. It is a myth that it can burst your pouch.
Medic Alert bracelets for RNY are completely unnecessary. My centre (TWH) does not recommend them, because people often end up putting unhelpful or dangerous information on this, such as the information listed above. If you feel you must have one for some reason, all it should EVER say is "RNY Gastric Bypass", and then your allergy info (if any) and your emergency contact info.
If you're going to have a Medic Alert bracelet, please make sure it doesn't end up killing you.

As a disclaimer:
I think anyone wanting to get a medical alert bracelet should talk to their doctor about what to put on it and not just solely take the advise from a forum of people who have no medical background or education to be giving advise on what to put on the actual bracelet.
We all have differing opinions and we all know that one program in Ontario is not always the same as the other.
Make sure you talk to your doctors about what needs to be written on your medical alert bracelet.

p.s. this is not to point out that anything said here was right or wrong but the topic was to discuss if you had a bracelet and wear it if you do. The content in which is printed on the medical assisting charm is a personal decision that I am sure everyone has educated themselves on individually but was not part of the original topic question.
