lol, thanks Monica. I will see how i feel, and play it by ear. i'm a bit of a whimp, with no pain tolerence, so maybe a hotle with the hubby will be a good idea, we have 4 kids, and i'm sure they will want to "help out", infact the hotel is sounding better and better..lol

I think your opti is a lil expensive.... check that out as others have stated its about $100 a week.
blood thinner post op - It all depends on if you are high risk for clots or not. I am not so I wont need them post op and if yo are one of the people that do your medical coverage from work should cover it (Assuming you have ins coverage)
hotel.. If you go the hotel route ask the clinic you go to about the hotel. I LOT of the time they will have arrangements for cheaper rates for patients and family.

Heather,
I work part-time as an RN. I took 4 weeks off work and returned to 4 weeks of light duties. I gave out meds and did anything which didn't require more than 15 lbs of lifting (so mostly paperwork, etc.) speak to your nurse manager and the occ. health people. Tell them you are having surgery and will have a weight lifting restriction for 8 weeks (if your MD concurs and, of course he will). You are NOT REQUIRED to disclose what type of surgery you are having. They should be able to accomodate you, particularly if you don't get paid sick time.
Also, you can apply for EI. There is a 2 week waiting period and they only pay something like 50% of your income to a max payment. For me it wasn't an option to remain to remain on EI because the payment didn't even cover my mortgage payment but it was an extra $1000 bucks in my pocket to help defray costs.
Hope this helps and Good Luck with everything.

Perhaps I wrote down the optifast cost wrong? I just called my support person and they too had written down the same figure from the pre-surgical assessment meeting....$600 a week for 2 weeks.....strange.
When my file was transferred to Humber River from Ottawa, the woman who called to ask if I would allow the transfer told me that additional costs associated with Toronto are the blood thinner that is not covered (while in Ottawa it would have been, in Toronto it's a different one) and then they expect the hotel stay.
I am a part time RPN, but up until the Christmas season I was working mainly full time hours due to call ins. ( I just finished school in April and got hired on out of placement)
We just got a new manager, but I will make an appointment to talk to her. I was under the impression that my new and part time status would not allow for accomadations.
Thanks for the good news, advice and suggestions.

I live in Trenton, which is 2 1/2 hours to Ottawa or 2 hrs to the far side of Toronto. I'm about 1 hour to Kingston.

my file was transferred as well. I was quoted 100 per week for opti. regarding the blood thinners, Ottawa only prescibes on an as need basis. The give the routine ones in hospitol. I was told by ottawa, and humber that htey usually prescibe the blood thinners as part of the regime, but not always. If you have drug coverage, it should be covered. I am with blue cross, and they have said that it will be covered. Hope this helps
Hi Heather :)
Welcome to OH :D This is a great place for info!
I also work in a hospital, as a part time cleaner but also work full time hrs and alot of call ins as well. I do ALOT of heavy lifting and asked my surgeon for 8 weeks off, you probably don't need that much time but I knew when I went back, I wouldn't be able to go back to "light duties". I agree with Monica, other people could help with the lifting and bathing of patients- "NurseTammy" is a good person to ask, she also works in a hospital and could probably share her experience of when she went back to work.
As for time off, you should be able to claim EI benefits. There is a 28day waiting period for this and you should put enough money away for that time period. So, try to save what you would make in a month or at least enough to cover the bills. ;)
The optifast basically goes by your weight: if you are in the 200s, you need 2 weeks (roughly $200) 300s/ 3 weeks (roughly $300) and so on.
There are quite a few motels and places to stay for a reasonable cost and some may have a "hospital rate" but you have to ask. You may only need to stay for a few days after you surgery.
I did not have to stay in a motel as I only live 2 hrs away as well.
