Many of us on the board have proved this to be true.  I am one of them.

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

It's great that they are comparing the various WLS to one another for efficacy in putting diabetes into remission. It's long been known that the DS (referred to erroneously as BPD in the article) is the most effective surgery for this with 95% plus being effectively cured immediately after surgery. Even more importantly, the rates of diabetes recurrence for people with the DS is virtually non-existent, whereas 40% plus with RNY will see their diabetes come back. I hope that DS surgery becomes more and more available to people in Ontario as a treatment for diabetes.

Thanks so much for posting this. I virtually left the hospital not needing my BP medication. I had surgery in July and no longer take any medication. I will be forever grateful for the tremendous gift of weight loss surgery.

For me my bloodsugars were normally from the day i left the hospital....both my family doctor and i were amazed at how quickly this was realized. Every visit with my MD we discontinue another medication...no more diabetes meds, BP meds cut in half, cholesterol meds are next to go, CPAP is a thing of the past and if all goes well maybe thyroid and GERD meds are next to go...i love my RNY

Wow, I am one of the lucky ones that do not have diabetes as a problem - but this article shows another reason bariatric surgery is important.  Good to see, when theres so much talk of the government cutting back in health care - should help keep barietric surgery available/
