RNY - chances of me being denied?
Hello Everyone!
I was talking to someone at work today about my excitement to be having WLS some time next year (projected date, not positive when). My coworker was quick to remind me that I may not qualify for the surgery because it is "hard" to get accepted by the WLC at Ottawa and OHIP...
I suppose I should be more attentive to this thought instead of jumping the gun here...so this brings me to this post... anyone have any idea what are the "qualifying factors to be approved" for WLS ?
some quick stats on me: 5'6' 320lbs, BMI over 50, 26 years old, healthy ( as healthy as one can be this size), I have PCOS, lost one ovary 5 years ago due to a 9lbs cyst contorting and they had to remove the cyst and the left ovary, dad died at 47yrs of cancer and mom has diabetes...
I guess I figured I would be considered a good candidate... i could be wrong...
Someone help set things straight?
Thanks for all your help loves!!!

BMI of 35 plus comorbidities or BMI of 40 with no comorbities. You have to go through the whole assessment and there is always a chance they tell you that you are not ready for surgery but seriously I have seen one person in the all the years I have been on here told that. I think your coworkder is seriously mistaken.

I'm interested in replies to this. I do wonder what the decline rate is be it OHIP Or the clinic.

each case is looked at on an individual basis..don't go making assumptions or worry about WHETHER or not
....family background + all the tests that you will have prior to having your file submitted to OHIP will build your case.

prior to surgery 323lbs....4 years post-op maintaining between 108- 114 lb loss.
life is AMAZING when you continue on the right path~!. Use your surgeons gift to the fullest~!

Your coworker is mistaken. The qualifying factors are pretty cut and dried. Lots of people who know nothing about WLS think they know lots.
The only reason the WLC in Ottawa would deny you (because, clearly you meet the BMI criteria), is if you're not "ready" for surgery, for psychological or preparedness reasons (eg - an eating disorder, or you're not ready to change your eating habits post surgery). They may also deny you because you're not a good surgical candidate (if your physical health issues mean you can't have surgery).
The WLC in Ottawa is no harder or easier to get accepted by than any other centre here in ontario.
From the stats you've given, i think you're a good candidate.
This is an excellent time to prepare yourself by doing lots of research (this website is an awesome one, as is the Bariatric registry .

Not to be rude to your co-worker but she is incorrect. You do qualify.
It is frustrating that individuals are uneducated about the process and end up making statements such as this.
Although it is good to know what your BMI is. Would be horrible to wait months to go to the orientation, get weighed, and find out your BMI is under 35.

I agree with Monica 100%... you do qualify based on your BMI, OHIP will cover it.
As mentioned by others.. people have been ``DENIED`` I am going to change that to delayed because of their mental emotional state and the social worker or someone else doesn`t feel they are mentally or emotionally ready..
knowing some people who have been delayed its something like wait 3 months .. reasses your thoughts get the additional support or help and we`ll discuss it again...
Best of luck to you
