I have lost 40 pounds in 4 weeks. I'm 4 weeks out and am having extreme back pain. What can I take over the counter because my doctors office doesn't prescribe narcotics. The pain hurts so bad I feel like throwing up :((((

Your back is close to your intestines and your lungs.  I would see a doctor ASAP.

Back pain can be a heart attack. Or a clot

I would say `take an aspirin` and go to the hospital (if this is new pain).

Aside from that, tylenol goes down easy for me.

Pain is the body's way of telling us there is something wrong. You need to see your doctor. It is unreasonable, in my opinion, for a doctor to have a blanket policy of not prescribing narcotics. Is that the case for their terminal cancer patients?
If the pain is severe, then go to the emergency department. Just a hint, if you can handle the pain, wait until 3 or 4 am as you will be seen and home more quickly if the ER is usually busy.

Sorry Carol but that is untrue about the ER.  . It is first come first serve depending on level of acuity. And taking an ambulance in does NOT gaurantee you faster service either so please don't call one unless you are in extreme distress

You have several health care options available to you

Call telehealth. They can assess you over the phone and then advise what to do. ie be seen by  family dr in the morning, be seen within the next four hours

Call  family doctor and tell the secretary you are in extreme pain and need to be seen today. Physicians as a rule won't "not" prescribe narcotics but usually if the patient has a history of drug abuse they won't prescibe. They don't usually store them on site either so you may wish to ask your doc about this?

go to a walkin clinic

if your condition is serious you will get sent TO an emerg by one of the above

if it's the middle of the nite and you just can't cope with the pain anymore, go to emerg but while you can access other means of care.  Not to mention that your wait time at the emerg could be way way way longer than at your doctor's office.. Or on the phone with telehealth

As the other ladies have said, pain is your bodies way of telling you something is wrong and you should deal with it.

Good luck!..

Hi Mermaid,
I guess the 30 years of working as an RN in a very busy Toronto ER taught me nothing! Forgive me for trying to offer some assistance. And by the way, it was ME who said that pain is your body telling you there is something wrong.

Thank you everyone. I used to suffer severe back pain when I was 450 plus. I told my sugeon about it and he wasn't alarmed. Yes I think it's rediculous that my go cant prescribe even t3's to just help for when it's really bad. I have never had a history of abusing medication. I will try Tylenol and see if it helps. Thank you heather. Don't worry I'm a fighter and don't plan on going out without a fight lol. I will be here. Xoxo. Thanks for the help everyone. Don't know what I would do without this site.

What about some Robaxacet®. It is Tylenol with a muscle relaxer made for back pain. It is over the counter. The pills are kind of big so you will have to cut them.
I usually take Tramacet and Flexeril for severe back pain.

I did not think that T3's were considered a narcotic. I usually take at least 2 a day for back and joint pain.
