When/What/How???

I told my manager when she came to visit me during my maternity leave.  She was super excited.

Nobody else at work knows and my manager has given me the green light for anything I need in the way of time off for appointments/tests.

At my orientation, they mentioned an average of 4 weeks for recovery.

Through insurance, I have up to 24 weeks ( but won't need any more than 4... maybe less because I can work from home)

RNY on 11/14/12

I told my work once the surgery date was booked.  I'm the third ( that I know of ) that will be having this surgery so they knew what I needed and so on.  As for time off I'm going to ask for the full 6 weeks which will take me past Christmas :) I've also spoken to the other people at work who had RNY and both of them wished they had the extra time off instead of the 4 weeks.  I drive for London Transit so my night consists of a lot of bouncing around. Not to mention, usually by week 5 you start introducing solids again whi*****reases the risk to dump. So the extra time to heal would be nice. The time off should be covered by your short term disability portion of your benefits.

You are not required to tell your employer that you are having surgery, never mind the type of surgery you are having. All you need to do is give them notice that you are taking medical leave from this date to that date and give them a medical note to back it up. I didn't feel human for 6 weeks and recommend that as a minimum. I warned my manager about 2 months ahead that I would be taking medical leave soon and that I'd let them know as soon as I had a specific date. Your HR person should be able to advise you how much paid sick leave you have. If you don't have any, you can use EI for any time beyond the first two weeks. My employer gives 6 months as a combined sick leave/short term disability plan and after that it is long-term disability.

I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

I told my employer, I was excited and wanted to share the news. I told them as soon as I knew I was going to have the surgery (when I got my date)

I agree with others in saying - TAKE YOUR TIME and heal!! You don't want to have any complications. What do you do for work?

Save up some money, about a month worth to get you by. If you go on EI, you won't get anything for 28-30 days. I took off 8 weeks, I work in a hospital as a cleaner and wanted to make sure I was good and healed. Although the day I was supposed to return, I had my gall bladder out, so I took the whole 15 weeks of EI benefits off.

I had an amazing recovery...I had no need for pain meds and felt no discomfort and was back to work the week after surgery. Really depends, like others mentioned, is how well your body recovers.

Happy journey,
Nathalie

I told my boss before my referral was even sent in. We have a great relationship and I had no problems or concerns telling him. We talk about the surgery every once in a while and I keep him updated as things progress. We've worked together for over 10 years. I've actually gained over 100# in the time that he's known me, so he's seen my weight struggles.

My supervisor and coworkers are very supportive. I'm a very open person, and have to trouble talking about my weight or the surgery. One of my colleagues had RNY about 4 years ago, so the concept and benefits of weight loss surgery isn't foreign to them.

I'm taking 5 weeks off when I have my surgery. I'm doing leave with income averaging... So, I'll still get paid when I'm off, but my salary will be reduced for a year to cover the time i didn't work. That way, I'll still have 4 weeks vacation and some sick leave available if I have complications over the next year.

Deffinately check with your HR department to see what your eligible for.

I just came out and told them info as soon as I knew it.. Like for all my appointments and everything... When I got my date they were the first to know... Then all of you here....

They already knew what it was for

I just came out and told them...... It was easy for me really one of my bosses had the surgery 2 years ago so she broke the ice for me

RNY on 05/16/12

Even though I knew for months beforehand that I was having the surgery I didn't tell them until I went for my pre-op class. I knew I'd be having surgery within a few months and as a teacher i wanted to give my principal as much notice as possible.

I told him I was having WLS surgery because another teacher had already had it and I felt that way he knew what to expect in terms of time off, appointment beforehand, etc.

In regards to time off I took 4 weeks off.  After a week I thought i was ready to go back. I remember going on about how bored I was at home.  However weeks 2-3 were rough as I introduced food so I was glad I took 4 weeks.
