CRAZY Trans-Canada Challenge: Results Week 4 (Oct. 29-Nov 4)
I had a great week this week. And here's an NSV related to the Challenge.
On Saturday I took the day off exercise and did housework all day. Still active, but no kms for the Challenge. I had already decided that I would join the Running Room for their Sunday free run. If you aren't in the know, you can join the RR runs usually twice a week. The one I go to in Pickering has free runs on Wednesdays and Sunday mornings (at 8:30).
So up I got, and it was cold and I started talking myself out of it. But still put on my layers and drove to the RR. It was snowing on the way. I kept thinking, "What the hell are you doing? You're going to freeze!" Then I started talking myself into going to the nice warm gym and running on the treadmill (which, so far, I hate...much rather run outside). But I got there, just in time, and the groups were all separating into their different distance runs. I just caught up with a group and asked how far we're going, they said 8k run (9 k total with cool down walking). So I stuck with them.
Throughout the run there were times I wanted to stop. They have a faster pace than me. But I kept going. The person leading the group kept turning around and asking me if I wanted to go faster, I could go to the front of the line. I kept saying that I was fine. During the last two kms, I had stayed with the front of the group (out of the 10 of us, 4 stayed together, while a few dropped back). The ladies I was with started asking me running questions, "So, what's your name? What races have you done?" I laughed and said i've only just really started running, that I would like to do a half marathon and eventually a full. They were actually shocked. They said most people don't "start" running with seasoned runners who are doing 8k at the pace they were going at. I told them I lost a lot of weight and always hated running, but it's better now that i'm lighter. Then we got into the surgery, and one other runner's sister had the surgery in the States. They were all very positive about it and when we were done they all high-fived me on my accomplishments and said that they thought I had been running for years. I laughed and said that I kept finding it funny that they even thought I COULD go faster.
It felt very good, and made me, once again, happy that I talked myself INTO going, instead of out....as I always have in years past.
Here are my totals
4 spinning classes = 100 kms
2k walking my trick-or-treaters
9 k running and walking yesterday. Total 111 kms :-)
Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!
What a wonderfully heartwarming story and a great way to start off my grumpy Monday morning.
You are an inspiration to us all, you expert runner, you!
... and talking yourself INTO exercise is infinitely more satisfying than talking yourself out of it!
Well, i'm handing this to you. Because of the Challenge, it is easier to get me to commit. I wanted more kms this week than last. I might have talked myself out of going, without bearing the Challenge in mind. :-) So thank YOU!

What a great NSV Kelly!
It always feels good to get out there and try something...It's just getting out there that can be hard ...so good on ya!!!
